Hi all... 2 things. One, MLBmods doesn't seem to have a way to register. Has a login, but if you aren't registered, you cant login. Two, Norton sasys site is unsafe with Trojan ADH.
Norton is a piece of ****. Mlbmods doesn't have any trojans. And if you can't register there, then there's nothing you can do about it.

Homer - It's no different over here. I'm spending a few hours in total each day banning spam accounts, cleaning spam messages from the forums, etc. I know that my modding time is being seriously impacted by all this. You guys can thank all the guys who are spamming and abusing the boards. New user registration is closed for the time being until I figure out a way to keep out the guys who want to abuse membership. I can't keep up with modding if I have to constantly be on the site dealing with those issues.
I try to log on 5 or 6 times a day to keep on top of this issue. If I go one to two days without logging on, it takes quite a while to catch up. I can't imagine what it will be like if I go on vacation for a week or more!
I'm going to have to train my trusted lieutenants Sean O and RaptorQuiz on what I do because I'll probably be asking them to help out if I'm away for an extended period of time.

There's got to be a better way to handle it. I haven't been able to mod much because of the increase in spam and banned users trying to find loopholes by creating duplicate accounts. I've thought about making registration by Admin only, but that just floods our emails with requests everyday. I'm open to ideas if you ever find a good one. I've just had enough of them lately, and don't have time to deal with it this week.
This is just an idea, but what if new users couldn't post anything in forums for, let's say a month? They could still download items, but they'd be limited to that until their New Member Probationary Time is up.

Over here, new user posts are not visible to the general public for a day or two (I can't remember exactly how long Trues set it up for). This was implemented about a month ago and has really helped because when I review the forums, I can delete the spam posts before non-Admins see them. This is just an idea, but what if new users couldn't post anything in forums for, let's say a month? I think Dylan is on to something though. If a spammer had to wait a month to post, they would likely move on. Or, am I just fooling myself?
No, I don't think you are. But as Homer stated in his post, those idiots that are doing this are finding loopholes to get past this no new registrations that they have over at Mlbmods. If you check out that website, especially in the mornings, you will see that these accounts have been having no trouble at all getting access on Mlbmods and spamming the hell out of it. Can you imagine if there was no ban on new users for those guys? Homer wouldn't have time for anything because he's doing it all himself over there.
Right now the registration freeze is good for them over there and as far as waiting for a month for new users to post, I'd go as far as making it even longer.

The majority of the spam accounts I see have gibberish names with gibberish e-mail addresses. I believe that they are generated through some sort of automated process, rather than an individual person sitting there typing them all in. The same goes for the spam messages I see on the forums.I think Dylan is on to something though. If a spammer had to wait a month to post, they would likely move on. Or, am I just fooling myself?

Sounds like a Yankee fan I know very well.

Jim's right. You can spot these spam accounts with ease. But even though these can be annoying and a pain to clear off the forums, these are not the worst things that can happen to the people that run these websites. Make no mistake, seeing these Cialis ads and Viagra ads that pop up are things we all have no use for, but the spammers who are even worse are the ones who seem to create accounts late at night or early in the morning and instead of posting links to online drug places, they post tasteless and disgusting pornographic photos, usually guys on guys. I remember once a few years back when I was still working and I logged in here around 5 am and I caught five threads with the same photo that I never want to see ever again.
Fortunately those accounts are a rarity here. But when the summer comes you can put money down on some kid doing it.
This is why I want to suggest one thing to you Jim that could help in stopping these spammers. Is there a way to prevent everyone from creating a new account on here from around let's say 2 am to 8 am East coast time? So whomever wants to make an account will get message telling them exactly why this is done and to ask them to come back later to register on the site. That way, if a spammer is going to make an account and post his Viagra links, he'll do it after 8 am when a staff member is here and they can get rid of it quickly instead of having it on the site for a few hours when everyone is asleep. I don't know if Trues can set this up but I think it is worth asking.
