The Year of the Blue Jay: A Cybernetic Dynasty v2.0

Well basically I had too many right-handed bats and I need another left-handed bat in the lineup. Hinske is useless. I'm going to have Griffin stick around as long as I can, if he does really well he'll stay longer. It's a good start so far.. if he goes through a bad streak I'll send him back down and go with John Rodriguez.

Jays stymied by Santana

May 7, 2006 - Game 30/162

Game 3/4: Los Angeles Angels (12-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (20-9)

Los Angeles Angels 3, Toronto Blue Jays 0

icon_tor.gif

Ervin Santana threw the game of his life allowing just 1 hit in a complete game shutout. The Jays actually had 2 guys reach base on questionable error calls that should've been ruled hits plus errors. The Angels scored on 2 sac-flies and a solo home run. Reliever Justin Speier left the game with a low back strain is expected to miss the next week; he will not be placed on the DL.

Clubhouse Talk:

"The offense is in a deep funk right now, we need to get it straightened out or our rivals are going to catch us fast." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Well I'm going to go play the 4th game of the series against the Angels. I've decided not to move down to Pro again but to adjust the sliders.. apparantly I had the CPU ball rate at 25 which meant the guy would throw out of the zone a lot and I'm a free-swinger so I struck out a lot swinging at bad pitches. I returned that value to 0 and I'll try it out. Chacin vs. Jeff Weaver in the series finale. Angels can earn a split with a win.

My game keeps crashing now in this game. This time I was at 2-outs in the bottom of the 9th losing 3-2 with K-Rod on the hill and it crashes to the desktop. I'm gonna try this game one more time and if it crashes again I'll have to manage it.

Jays Rough Up Weaver, Hang on for Victory

May 8, 2006 - Game 31/162

Game 4/4: Los Angeles Angels (13-19) @ Toronto Blue Jays (20-10)

Toronto Blue Jays 8, Los Angeles Angels 6

icon_tor.gif

The Jays roughed up Jeff Weaver in tonight's series finale and hung on to win it 8-6. The Angels actually opened the scoring in the top of the 1st scoring a run on a Garrett Anderson RBI-single to take a 1-0 lead. The Jays stormed back in the bottom half of the inning though. Frank Catalanotto hit a 1-out double followed by an Alex Rios single to move him to third. After Vernon Wells struck out, Troy Glaus doubled to score Catalanotto and tie the game. Lyle Overbay would then follow that with a 3-run home run (10) to make it 4-1. Gregg Zaun would follow with a single but end up stranded as John-Ford Griffin flew out to the wall in right-field. After the Angels were set down in the order in the 2nd by Gustavo Chacin, the Jays offense was at it again. John McDonald and Russ Adams both struck out but then Frank Catalanotto singled to keep the inning alive. Alex Rios and Vernon Wells would then hit back-to-back home runs making it 7-1. John-Ford Griffin would hit a 2-out solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd making it 8-1 and chasing the starter Jeff Weaver. Weaver went just 2.2 innings yielding 8 runs which were all earned on 9 hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 3.

The Angels scored 3 times in the 4th on 4 singles, a walk and a fielder's choice. Adam Kennedy was gunned down at the plate by Vernon Wells to end the inning leaving the game at 8-4. Gustavo Chacin returned for the top of the 6th and retired the first two batters before being pulled for Brandon League. Chacin went 5.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, walked a batter and struck out 2. In the 8th inning, Brandon League allowed a one out solo home run to Jose Molina to make it 8-5 and was pulled for Jason Frasor who retired both batters he faced. B.J. Ryan came out to pitch the 9th to get his 11th save of the season. He struggled with command, however, hitting 2 batters and allowing a run on 1 hit: a double by Garrett Anderson. He did get Brandon Wood to pop out to end the game though.

Clubhouse Talk:

"I didn't have good command tonight, I was struggling to get a good grip of the baseball." - B.J. Ryan, CP

"Great to see our offense wake up there after the struggles the past few games. Our starting staff is still struggling aside from Halladay and Lilly. Hopefully we can straighten that out soon." - John Gibbons, Mgr

OF Justin Singleton (AAA) activated from the 15-day DL; transferred to AA.

OF Maikel Jova (AA) released.

Outlook:

The Jays will take on the Oakland A's for a 3-game series starting tomorrow.

G.M. Notes:

On John McDonald demotion:

"Johnny Mac just can't hit at this level. He's great defensively but we need to backup infielder who can hit and spell the everyday infielders without being an offensive liability."

On Jova release:

"He's struggled badly at the plate this year in AA after spending all of last year in AA with decent numbers. He was barely hitting over .100 and he's getting told old and is not a good enough prospect to wait on. We gave him every chance to succeed but he just wasn't getting it done at the level we wanted."

On Alfonzo:

"He's veteran hitter who's had good numbers in the past. He's getting on in age but I think he can still play a valuable role on this team off the bench. He's going to be in the lineup most games against lefties."

Jays Fall to A's in Opener

May 9, 2006 - Game 32/162

Game 1/3: Oakland A's (18-14) @ Toronto Blue Jays (21-10)

Oakland 5, Toronto 2

icon_tor.gif

The Jays failed to get much going against Joe Kennedy and the A's in tonight's game. (play-by-play lost for A's) The A's scored once in the 1st, 3 times in the 3rd and once in the 7th. Milton Bradley and Jason Kendall each had 2 RBI and Eric Chavez had 1. Chavez hit a sac-fly. Alex Rios homered in the 1st to put the Jays on the board. Vernon Wells hit an RBI double to score Aaron Hill in the 7th. Joe Kennedy (4-1) was outstanding going 6 1/3 innings yielding 2 runs on 3 hits, walked none and struck out 9 batters. Rookie Casey Janssen (1-1) struggled in the loss going just 3 innings. He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits, walked 3 batters and didn't strike out anyone. 5 relievers pitched over the final 6 innings and just allowed 1 unearned run but the Jays couldn't get anything going offensively for much of the game. The best chance came in the 9th off closer Huston Street. Both Aaron Hill and Alex Rios singled to lead off the inning but were left stranded after Vernon Wells struck out. Troy Glaus then grounded out to move the runners over but Aaron Hill was picked off at third base to end the game.

Clubhouse Talk:

"My command just wasn't sharp and it's unacceptable to put the team in that bad of a situation early on." - Casey Janssen, SP

"Janssen is a good kid, he'll learn how to throw at this level and be back up at some point soon. We were forced to send him down to AAA after the game." - John Gibbons, Mgr

7th Inning Rally Sparks Walk Off Win

May 10, 2006 - Game 33/162

Game 2/3: Oakland A's (19-14) @ Toronto Blue Jays (21-11)

Toronto 4, Oakland 3

05106ye.jpg

Left: Alex Rios hits a ball to the wall in left-field with the outfield playing shallow to walk off.

Right: Justin Duchscherer upset with himself after the loss.

icon_tor.gif

Roy Halladay was pretty sharp all night long except for the 4th where Oakland jumped on him to score 3 runs. Nick Swisher led-off the inning with a single. Bobby Crosby then doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd for Eric Chavez. Chavez hit a triple into the left-center field gap to score both of them. Frank Thomas would then hit a sacrifice fly to score Chavez as the A's took a 3-0 lead. A's starter Joe Blanton was coasting until the 7th where the wheels fell off for him. The Jays opened up the inning with back-to-back singles from Troy Glaus and Lyle Overbay. Gregg Zaun then doubled to score both pinch runners. After John-Ford Griffin grounded out to third, Aaron Hill then singled and moved Zaun to third. Russ Adams would double to drive him in and tie the game at 3. Both he and Hill would be left stranded.

With the game now tied, manager John Gibbons opted not to leave Roy Halladay in to face Eric Chavez who was leading off the 8th. Chavez was 3-for-3 with a triple and 2-RBI against Halladay in the game so he brought in left-handed specialist Scott Schoeneweis to face him. It paid off as he struck out Chavez. Scot Shields then came in to face the right-hander Frank Thomas and gave up a base hit. He would get out of the inning retiring the next 2 batters easily. The Jays managed a basehit in the 8th but failed to score a run. In top of the 9th, Shields yielded back-to-back singles to lead off the inning to Jason Kendall and Marco Scutaro before being pulled for B.J. Ryan. Ryan retired all 3 batters he faced in order to set up a wild 9th inning finish.

In the bottom of the 9th, John-Ford Griffin led-off with a basehit. Aaron Hill would then square around for a sacrifice bunt to move him over. The bunt was almost perfect as he got the first baseman, Dan Johnson, to come in to field it and he threw it away. Both Griffin and Hill advanced a base on the error. Duchscherer then walked Russ Adams intentionally to set up a force at every base. Frank Catalanotto popped up in the infield and failed to bring a runner in. With the A's playing the infield in and the outfield shallow to cut off the run, Alex Rios smashed a line drive into the left-field corner to score Griffin and get a walk off victory for the Jays.

Clubhouse Talk:

"I didn't have great command and left the ball up a few times. Fortunately, I didn't get hit too hard except for that one inning." - Roy Halladay, SP

"Good rally from the team. It would be easy to just give up after the struggles we had against Blanton but we kept battling and got the win." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Jays Rough Up Zito, Take Series Over A's

May 11, 2006 - Game 34/162

Game 3/3: Oakland A's (19-15) @ Toronto Blue Jays (22-11)

Toronto 4, Oakland 3

05115ef.jpg

Left: Milton Bradley watches a Vernon Wells home run go into the bullpen.

Right: Ken Macha comes out to pull Barry Zito in the 5th.

icon_tor.gif

Ted Lilly started off the game getting into a very tough spot in the first inning. He yielded back-to-back singles to startt he game. Then with two outs, he walked Frank Thomas to load the bases. Luckily he got Milton Bradley to ground out to end the inning unscathed. Edgardo Alfonzo hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd to open the scoring for the Jays. It would stay 1-0 until the bottom of the 3rd where Barry Zito got hammered. Vernon Wells hit a 2-run home run with Alex Rios on to make it 3-0. The Jays would string together 3 straight singles and extend the lead to 5-0. In the fifth, Troy Glaus would hit a 1-out single and that would be enough for Zito on this night as he was pulled after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in the game.

In the top of the 6th, the A's would get on the board. Ted Lilly would allow 3 straight 1 out singles to load the bases. After Lilly got Melhuse to flyout to shallow right-field, Marco Scutaro doubled into the right-center field gap and cleared the bases making it 5-3. Lilly would retired Mark Kotsay to end the inning without futher damage. The Jays would get to reliever Kirk Saarloos in the bottom of the inning as Alex Rios hit a 3-run home run to make it 8-3. The A's would add a run in the 9th off reliever Jason Frasor but that would be as close as it would get as the Jays take the rubber match 8-4.

A big loss came to the Jays in top of the 7th, during a pitch to Eric Chavez. Ted Lilly was forced to leave the game with a forearm strain. Following the game, team doctors said he would miss about 19 days and he was placed on the 15-day DL. Dustin McGowan was recalled from Syracuse (AAA) to take his spot in the rotation. This will allow the Jays to push back Halladay's next start until Monday. McGowan will start the 3rd game against Tampa Bay this weekend.

Clubhouse Talk:

"I don't know what happened. I threw a pitch and during the pitch I felt some pain in my forearm." - Ted Lilly, SP

"That's a tough loss, he's been very reliable for us this season. Now we've lost our #2 and #3 starters to injury." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Jays Shutout by Kazmir, Rays

The Jays struggled to get much going against Scott Kazmir in the series opener in Tampa Bay. He was outstanding in mixing up his pitching and keeping the Jays hitters off-balance. He yielded just 3 hits in the shutout. He actually was throwing a perfect game until the bottom of the 6th where Edgardo Alfonzo hit a 2-out double. Kelvim Escobar was throwing a good game for the Jays despite being wild and walking 4 batters. He managed to escape from trouble on several occassions. In the 7th, the D-Rays got on the board. Delmon Young hit a lead-off solo home run to open the inning and later with two outs, Carl Crawford hit a solo shot as well. The Jays managed to get a hit in the 9th off Kazmir but he ended up getting picked off.

Despite getting the loss (1-3), Escobar didn't throw badly. He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits over 7 innings, walked 4 and struck out 2. Scott Kazmir was outstanding in the complete game shutout striking out 14 and walking none.

Clubhouse Talk:

"My command wasn't very sharp but I stayed out of trouble for the most part." - Kelvim Escobar, SP

"Scott Kazmir is a good young prospect, he looks like he's for real and good to see they finally have a true ace." - John Gibbons, Mgr

The Jays were edged by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3-2. Gustavo Chacin pitched a pretty good game for the Jays but didn't get any run support leaving down 3-0. The Jays scored both their runs on solo home runs from Eric Hinske and Frank Catalanotto. Tampa Bay hit 2 solo home runs and socred on an RBI single by Aubrey Huff. B.J. Upton and Jorge Cantu hit the home runs for the D-Rays. The problem for the Jays like many games recently was struggling to hit with runners on base and bring them in.

Clubhouse Talk:

"I had to battle all night to hold back their offense, they have some good hitters." - Gustavo Chacin, SP

"We're just not clicking offensively lately. We can't seem to pile on the runs like we did a couple of weeks ago." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Jays Rally to Avoid Sweep

May 14, 2006 - Game 37/162

Game 3/3: Toronto Blue Jays (23-13) @ Tampa Bay Devil Rays (20-17)

Toronto 8, Tampa Bay 5

icon_tor.gif

Despite a late solo home run by Joey Gathright who hit 2 in the game, his first 2 of his big league career the Jays hung on for an 8-5 victory and avoided the sweep. The Jays hit four home runs in the game, all off the starter Edwin Jackson. The Devil Rays opened the scoring in the 2nd hitting 2 solo home runs (Toby Hall and Joey Gathright). After 2 straight innings by both pitchers, the Jays exploded in the 5th. Troy Glaus and Lyle Overbay hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game. The Devil Rays then re-took the lead on a double by Rocco Baldelli, making it 3-2. After an Alex Rios triple in the 6th, Vernon Wells hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game again. Dustin McGowan then set the Devil Rays down in order in the bottom of the frame and left after that. In the 7th, Gregg Zaun led off with a single and was pinch run for by Eric Hinske. Then on the next pitch, John-Ford Griffin hit his 2nd home run of the season giving the Jays a 5-3 lead. Alex Rios would hit a 3-run home run for the inning was through as the Jays took a commanding 8-3 lead and hung on for an 8-5 victory.

Doc is in as Jays Blank Angels

icon_tor.gif

It was a good pitcher's duel between Bartolo Colon and Roy Halladay tonight. Both pitcher's were sharp although Halladay seemed to be sharper. The Jays got to Colon first as John-Ford Griffin hit his 3rd home run of the season in just 8 games with the big club. A solo shot in the 3rd inning. Roy Halladay was cruising from there rarely getting into a trouble. In the 4th, the Angels loaded the bases with none out after Halladay hit Orlando Cabrera with a pitch and then gave up back-to-back singles to Garret Anderson and Vladimir Guerrero, neither was very hard hit so they were unable to advance further. But Halladay got Shea Hillenbrand to fly into a double play with Cabrera getting gunned down at the plate and then Casey Kotchman grounded out as the Angels were shutout in the inning. The Jays scored another run in the 6th to make it 2-0 when Alex Rios singled with 2 runners on to bring in Russ Adams. The Jays gunned down Vladimir Guerrero at the plate in the 6th on a shallow Casey Kotchman single that he tried to score on from 2nd on with 2 outs. Lyle Overbay would hit a solo home run in the 7th to give Halladay a 3-run lead.

Halladay left after 7 1/3 shutout innings allowing 7 hits, walked no one and struck out 4. The bullpen shut it down from there giving up just a single hit (a basehit to Garret Anderson). B.J. Ryan closed out the game with his 12th save of the season. Halladay improves to 3-3 on the season with the win. Bartolo Colon got the loss (1-6) giving up all 3 Blue Jay runs on 10 hits and he also struck out 4.

Clubhouse Talk:

"I felt good. I was spotting my pitches well and getting a lot of easy outs." - Roy Halladay, SP

"Doc is great pitcher. He's been a bit inconsistent this season but we really haven't given him any runs to support him in his starts." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Bullpen Spoils Great Outing from Janssen but Jays Still Win

Casey Janssen was a completely different pitcher on this outing, keeping hitters off-balance with his off-speed stuff and movement. The Jays opened the scoring in the 2nd as John-Ford Griffin lined a double the other way to take a 1-0 lead. The Angels could come back to tie in the 4th after Garret Anderson doubled to deep center field and reached 3rd on a fielding error. He would later score on an RBI single by Brandon Wood. The Jays took the lead in the top of the 7th on a John-Ford Griffin solo home run. Casey Janssen faced one batter in the 7th and left with a 2-1 lead. In the 8th, however, Scot Shields would blow the lead after relieving Scot Schoeneweis who walked Chone Figgins. Figgins would steal 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a ground out and score on an RBI single by Garret Anderson. They'd get another hit in the inning and leave him stranded.

In the 9th, the Jays got to Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez who came on with the game tied at 2. With one out, Lyle Overbay hit a home run to deep right-center to give the Jays a 3-2 lead. B.J. Ryan came out complete the save, despite pinch hitter Jose Molina reaching base on an error to second baseman Russ Adams he did get the save as the Jays defeated the Angels 3-2. Justin Speier got the win (2-0) in 1/3 of an inning of work. Francisco Rodriguez fell to 0-1 with the loss.

Clubhouse Talk:

Here's something to note.. I'm carrying 7 relievers right now which means only 4 bench players.. interleague play starts in the next series after I'm done with Anaheim so I'm gonna have to send down a pitcher and call up another bat. I haven't decided who I'll call up but probably John Rodriguez. Unless another reliever is brutal over the next 2 games I'll send down my long man, Shaun Marcum.

Jays Fail to Sweep Angels

May 18, 2006 - Game 40/162

0518box7xw.jpg

05183fk.jpg

Left: Vernon Wells tracks a Garret Anderson double into the gap.

Right: The Jays bench discussing the loss.

The Jays failed to sweep the Los Angels Angels in the 3-game series and really struggled hitting with runners in scoring position. They were 1-for-15 on the game in that spot and the lone run they scored was on an RBI-groundout by John-Ford Griffin, right to the first baseman. Kelvim Escobar didn't pitch badly for the Jays but he got a bit unlucky. The Angels opened the scoring in 4th inning scoring on a bases loaded groundout to open the scoring. Dallas McPherson would hit a sac-fly to make it 2-0. The Angels scored a couple more runs in the 5th on an RBI-double by Garret Anderson (above) and an RBI single by Orlando Cabrera as they got out to 4-0 lead. The Jays scored their run in the 6th. The Jays couldn't get anything going off relievers J.C. Romero and Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod was extremely tough striking out the 3 batters he faced. Ervin Santana (5-2) picked up the win for the Angels going 7 strong. He gave up just 1 run on 10 hits, walked a batter (intentionally) and struck out 10. Kelvin Escobar was the loser (1-4) and is has lost all 3 starts since joining the Blue Jays. He allowed 4 runs on 10 hits, walked no one and had just one strikeout. Francisco Rodriguez got his 6th save of the season. Lyle Overbay was 3-for-4 and was just a home run short of the cycle.

Angels 2nd baseman Adam Kennedy left the game in the 6th with an injured knee after sliding in awkwardly at home to score the Angels 3rd run. Erick Aybar replaced him in the lineup and at 2B. He is expected to miss 30 days so it's a big loss for the Angels.

Clubhouse Talk:

"It's just one of those games where you pitch well but they get a bunch of lucky seeing-eye singles and your team can't score any runs." - Kelvin Escobar, SP

"Our struggles with runners in scoring position continues. If we really wanna contend by the end of the season we gotta do better at that." - John Gibbons, Mgr

Jays Through 40 games-

Starters:

#1 Roy Halladay:

Roy Halladay has pitched very well but does not get much run support in his starts. He is 3-3 with a 2.74 ERA through eight starts. He leads the team in strikeouts with fifty-nine in 62 1/3 innings and has walked just four batters. The league is hitting .248 off of him which is quite high but he has given up only one home run. He has pitched two complete games of his 8 starts.

#2 A.J. Burnett (on D.L.):

A.J. Burnett pitched very well in his 3 starts before being placed on the disabled list where he has been for about a month now. He was 3-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. He struck out 15 in that time and walked 4. The strikeouts are a bit low but considering that he was pitching through an elbow injury it not a big surprise. The league is hitting .244 off of him with 2 home runs. He is expected to return to the rotation in 33 days.

#3 Ted Lilly (on D.L.):

Ted Lilly was off to a great start and leads the team in wins with a 4-1 record in 7 starts. He also has a 3.06 ERA which is a bit inflated by his last start where he experience some forearm pain which effected his command. He has 30 strikeouts and 7 walks in 50 innings. The league is hitting just .234 off him but has hit 5 home runs. He is expected to return from the disabled list in another 11 days.

#4 Josh Towers (no longer with team):

Josh Towers pitched fairly good with a 3-1 record in 5 starts before being traded to the Cleveland Indians. He had a 2.51 ERA in this starts over 32 1/3 innings. The league was hitting .272 off which is quite high and they hit three home runs. The team decided that he wasn't going to re-sign next season and that they needed a more established veteran.

#5 Gustavo Chacin:

Gustavo Chacin has been fairly consistent which is very good from a #5 starter. He has a 3-4 record with a 3.73 ERA in 7 starts over 41 innings. The league is hitting .268 against him with a team-leading eight home runs. He has 29 strikeouts and just 1 walk though over his starts. He is currently up to the #4 spot in rotation with injuries/moves.

#6 Casey Janssen:

Casey Janssen has done a decent job as an injury replacement in the rotation. He has had 2 good starts, 1 decent one and one terrible start. He is 1-1 in 4 starts spanning 19 innings. He has 10 strikeouts and 6 walks over that time and the league is hitting .311 off him. He has also given up 2 home runs in those 4 starts.

#7 Kelvin Escobar:

Kelvim Escobar was re-acquired from the Angels and has pitched well despite an 0-3 with the Jays in his 3 starts. He has a 3.79 ERA with the team and a 3.92 ERA over all. He has 18 strikeouts and 11 walks over 6 total starts spanning 39 innings. The league hits .257 off him with 7 home runs.

#8 Dustin McGowan:

Dustin McGowan was called up when Ted Lilly went on the disabled list and has made one start which he won. He pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. He had 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in that outing. He is expected to stay in the rotation until Ted Lilly returns from the disabled list and then a decision will be made as to which one of them will be sent down.

The current rotation stands as:

1-Roy Halladay

2-Casey Janssen

3-Kelvim Escobar

4-Gustavo Chacin

5-Dustin McGowan

Bullpen:

B.J. Ryan (CP):

B.J. Ryan has been outstanding as the closer this season and is a menacing appearnce on the mound. He is 13 of 14 in save chances this season. He has struck out 17 batters over 16 2/3 innings and holds a 2.16 ERA. He has only walked one batter while the league is hitting .222 against him.

Justin Speier (SU):

Justin Speier has been my best reliever this season. He has a 0.00 ERA with a 2-0 record over 16 appearances spanning 14 2/3 innings. He only has 4 strikeouts and just 1 walk in those outings. He missing about a week on the disabled list this season. Being that he is more of a groundball pitcher those strikeout numbers are not surprising. The league is hitting just .143 off him.

Scott Schoeneweis (LH):

In the beginning of the season, I carried two lefties but since Scott Downs was traded to the Angels, there is only Scott Schoeneweis. He has pitched well and most of his runs allowed were not his own doing they were runners left on base when he was pulled that were let in. He has no record with a 2.53 ERA this season. He's struck out 4 but also walked 4 over 10 2/3 innings in 20 appearances. The league hits .211 off of him with one home run.

Scot Shields (SU):

Shields was acquired in the deal that brought Kelvim Escobar here and he has appeared in 5 games sporting a 0.00 ERA over 3 1/3 innings. He has 1 strikeout and 2 walks over that span. The league is hitting a lofty .412 off him however. He has moved into a middle relief/secondary setup role on the team.

Fernando Cabrera (MR):

He was acquired from the Indians in the deal that sent Josh Towers the other way. He has a 1-0 record this season with a 1.31 ERA. He has struck out 17 batters and walked just 3. The league is hitting just .195 off him with 2 homers. If the bullpen weren't so deep he'd be a set-up man. He has thrown 20 2/3 innings over 16 appearances this season.

Brandon League (MR):

League was called up probably two weeks ago as a middle reliever/long man. He has pitched very well with a 1-0 record and a 1.04 ERA over 6 appearances spanning 8 2/3 innings. He has 5 strikeouts and just 1 walk over that time. The league is hitting .194 off him. He is currently throwing in middle relief but could double as a long man if needed.

Relievers no longer with the team:

Pete Walker (LR):

Walker was on the opening day roster but there wasn't much room for the aging veteran on the team. He pitched well but didn't get a lot of work. He threw just 9 1/3 innings over 5 appearances. He struck out 6 batters in that time while the league was hitting just .125 off him. He was sent down to AAA to get more work and later granted his release.

Scott Downs (LR/SP):

Scott Downs pitched fairly well as a long man and also made 2 spot starts. He was 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA over 15 2/3 innings. He had 10 strikeouts and one walk. The league was hitting .318 off of him. He was traded to the Angels in the Kelvim Escobar deal.

Francisco Rosario (MR):

Francisco made the opening day roster and pitched inconsistently. He got off to a good start but struggled in his latter appearances prompting him to be sent down to AAA. He had no record in 7 appearances spanning 7 1/3 innings with a 5.87 ERA. He struck out 6 and walked one while the league was hitting .276. He may be called up later on in the season at some point but is now starting for AAA Syracuse.

Jason Frasor (MR):

Jason Frasor was also inconsistent in a middle relief role. He was 2-0 over 16 appearances spanning 14 2/3 innings. He had 8 strike outs and 7 walks. He also had a 4.91 ERA while the league hit .271 off him. He is now in AAA Syracuse.

Shaun Marcum (LR):

Shaun Marcum pitched briefly for the team while Justin Speier was injured in a long relief/middle relief role. He had no record and a 0.00 ERA in 3 appearances spanning 4 innings. He had 4 strikeouts and 1 walk but the league was hitting .313 off him. He was sent down to AAA for interleague play so that the team could carry an extra bat off the bench.
