Burnett and Wakefield duel it out in a night perfect for pitchers!

burnettvswakefield9xa.jpg

Burnett and Wakefield were spectacular tonight. The only difference in the game was a solo home run given up by Wakefield to the first batter of the game. Burnett pitched 8 shutout innings in which he struck out 6 and walked only 2. Wakefield was equally good as he gave up only 2 hits in 7 innings.B.J. Ryan came in the 9th for his second save of the season.

Josh Beckett strikes out 10 in another pitcher's duel!

lillyvsbeckett6ge.jpg

Beckett strikes out 10 in his 2nd start of the season while going 6.1 innings. David Ortiz provided the necessary offense with a two run blast in the first. The Blue Jays cut the lead down to 1 thanks to a RBI single by Gregg Zaun. But that was all the runs that would score in the game as Lilly and Beckett settled in and pitched gems. Lilly went 7.2 innings striking out 7 and walking 4.

Pitching! Pitching! Pitching!

towersvswells2lo.jpg

David Wells and Josh Towers continue the pitching trend in the series as only 3 runs were scored by both teams combined. Wells went 6.2 innings while giving up an unearned run and 5 strikeouts. The offense once again came from the bat of David Ortiz as he blasts his sixth home run of the season. The only run for the Blue Jays came in the first as part of a RBI single by Troy Glaus. Papelbon pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save of the season.

Papelbon with #3. Hopefully many more too come!!!

He could have had 4 but I brought in Riske in the 9th in the second game of the series. I had Riske warming up since the 8th but had completely forgot to warm Papelbon.

I am also actually thinking of maybe moving Papelbon to the starting rotation. If I can trade a starter or two. I would really like to get Lester and Papelbon in the rotation by the end of the year.

Red Sox bash 5 home runs to support Clement's strong outing.

game10pitchers6ce.jpg

Clement turned his second strong outing of the season as he went 7 innings and struck out 6. Moyer did not have his stuff at all as he lasted only 2 innings in which he gave up 3 walks and 6 earned runs. One positive for the Mariners in this game was the pitching of Foppert in relief. He went 6 strong innings with 6 strike outs and gave up just one run. The Red Sox offense was supported by David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, and Mike Lowell. Both Papi and Varitek went deep twice in the game.

Pineiro out duels Schilling as the Mariners even up the series at 1-1.

game11pitchers3jx.jpg

It was a pitcher's duel in a beautiful day at Fenway Park. Joel Pineiro out dueled Schilling to pick up his first win of the season. Joel went 6.1 innings while striking out 8 but walked 5. Schilling was just phenomenal on the other side as well. He went 8 innings while scattering 5 hits and striking out 5. The offense for both teams came with one swing of the bat as Adrian Beltre hit a two run home run in the 4th while Papi seemed to be carrying the Red Sox offense by hitting his 9th home run of the season. Manny Ramirez's struggles continues as he is 1 for his last 18. The Red Sox had plenty of opportunities to score and blow the game open but could take up on those chances.

game11b6ux.jpg

[1] With the bases loaded Papi struckout and Ramirez (pictured here) hit into an inning ending double play.

[2] Beltre hits a two run home run over the green monster.

[3] Pineiro strikes out Mike Lowell.

[4] Papi delivers the Red Sox offense for the day.

Another pitcher's duel but the Red Sox lose in 11 innings.

game12pitchers6sa.jpg

Both starting pitchers were great today. wakefield gave up only 3 hits but could not prevent a Jeremy Reed solo shot. The bullpen could not hold it for Wakefield as Seanez gave up the winning run for the Mariners. One good part for the Red Sox was the fact that Manny Ramirez hit his very first home run (a 487ft bomb over the green monster).

game126qb.jpg

[1] Beltre has no clue as to how to hit a knuckleball.

[2] Ramirez hits a 487 ft bomb.

[3] Youk has been spectacular at first.

[4] Reed delivers a solo blast.

The Sox salvage a split in this 4 game series.

game12pitchers6sa.jpg

Papi's 12 game hitting streak comes to end as well as his RBI streak. David Ortiz had had an RBI in each of the last five games. Beckett was weaving in and out of trouble but went 6 innings while giving up only 1 earned run. Mariners could not capitalize on given opportunites as they had left the bases loaded 4 times. J.T. Snow provided a big offense as he smacked a 3 run home run to put the Red Sox on top. Meche suffered his 3 loss of the season as he gave up 9 walks and threw 120 pitches. Tavarez made it interesting as he allowed 3 earned runs but did stike out Everett with the bases loaded.

game139zb.jpg

[1] With the bases loaded, Beckett struckout Ichiro and induces Johjima into an innning ending double play.

Fenway Park turns into a hitter's paradise for the Devil Rays and the Red Sox.

game14pitchers0wb.jpg

What turned out to be a good pitching matching turned into a slugfest as the Devil Rays won 11-10. David Wells was pitching extremely well for 5 innings but could not get out of the sixth. He gave up 8 runs, 7 earned. The Red Sox kept coming back but Riske could not hold it for the Red Sox. Gathright delivered the big 2 run home run in the 8th to win it for the Rays. Papi made up for his lack of RBI in his previous game with 2 big home runs and 5 RBIs today. Baldelli's first home run of the season turned out to be a grand slam home run. The 8 runs scored in the 6th really hurt the Red Sox.

game143qs.jpg

[1] Celebration time at Fenway Park as Papi crushes a home run.

[2] Baldelli hits a grand slam in the 6th off of Wells.

[3] Papi hits his second home run of the season.

[4] Gathright hits the game winning two run home run.

Clemens returns to Fenway Park while the D-Rays win second straight.

game15pitchers0hh.jpg

The second game of the series also turned out to be in favor of the hitters as the D-Rays won it 10-7. Clemens returned to Fenway Park and went 7 innings. He did have his set of troubles as he walked 7 and had to throw 112 pitches over those 7 innings. For the second straight game, the Red Sox starting pitching was awful. Clement lasted only 3.2 innings as he gave up 6 earned runs. The Red Sox did mount a come back as they chipped away at Clemens but Tavarez blew it by giving up two 2 run home runs. Red Sox made it interesting in the 9th but their comeback was not enough for the win. Baldelli got it going in the first with his second home run of the season as the D-Rays scored 4 runs in the first. Toby Hall and Johnny Gomes also went deep for the Rays. Youkilis and Nixon both had two hits for the Red Sox.

game158yw.jpg

[1] Baldelli hits his second home run in as many games.

[2] It was a beautiful night at Fenway Park.

[3] The Red Sox chipping away against Clemens.

[4] Nixon made it interesting in the 9th with a two run home run.

Schilling spectacular as Red Sox win the last game of the series.

game16pitchers9af.jpg

The Red Sox sent their Ace to the mound to win the last game of the 3 game series. Schilling was sensational as he baffled hitters for 7 innings. He struckout 8 and walked only 1. Timlin hit into a bit of a problem in the 9th but was able to keep the cool to get the win for the Red Sox. All the runs for the Red Sox came in the second inning when they scored 5 times. 5 different batters had 5 RBIs in the game for the Red Sox. Johnny Gomes hits his 4th home run of the season. Kazmir struggled as he lasted only 1.2 innings. He threw 50 pitches and walked 5 batters. Mark Hendrickson came in relief and just shut down the Red Sox. He gave up just 1 hit in 6.1 innings. Truly amazing. Hendrickson is currently fighting for a spot in the rotation.

slide19km.jpg

slide20nj.jpg

[1] Kazmir was in trouble early in the game.

[2] Schilling pitched a great game for the Red Sox.
