Baseball On The Radio

Yankee4Life

Recommended Posts

In celebration of the sixth year of Mvpmods, I decided to upload a classic radio baseball game that I have. It's the third game of the 1936 World Series between the New York Giants and the New York Yankees and it is being played in Yankee Stadium. The game is in four parts and it is in .Mp3 format.

If this is something that catches on in here, I can post a new radio game once a month. I'll just need to know if this is something that people would want because if not I'll just upload this one and be done with it.

Here are the Mp3 files:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Boxscore of this game from Retrosheet.

Enjoy!

I did have some feedback last month about the game I posted so I decided to post another one since today is the first of March. This month's broadcast is the very first game in New York Mets history. The date was April 11th, 1962 and the game was played in St. Louis. It's not a successful opening for the Mets as they go on to lose to the Cardinals. It will be their first loss of 120 that year. The Cardinals ended up in sixth place in 1962 with a 84-78 record, 17 1/2 games behind the pennant winning Giants.

So, without further delay, here is the first ever game in the history of the New York Mets in what I hope will be a monthly series of baseball radio broadcasts.

I have the WCBS 880 feed of the 2009 ALCS between the Yankees and Twins as well, if anyone wants them. They're in .wav format, but I'll convert them to MP3 if others want them.

Unfortunately, I don't have the ALCS or World Series.

Again I bow to your superiority. You already have the best games on DVD and now you even have the best radio broadcasts. :clapping:

It is April the 1st and no fooling, there is another radio baseball game that I am posting in here for anyone who wants it. This game is between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field in Detroit. The date is September 20, 1934. The Tigers won the American League pennant that year by seven games over the Yanks but lost to the Gas House Gang St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series in seven games. This game features five Hall of Famers playing in it. Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin and Hank Greenberg for the hometown Tigers and Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri for the visiting Yankees. Mickey Cochrane was the regular Tiger catcher as well as their manager but did not play in this game and Babe Ruth was still on the Yankees and also did not play. Other Yankee Hall of Famers who did not play in this contest were catcher Bill Dickey, outfielder Earle Combs, pitchers Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing and Burleigh Grimes. This game is the oldest game that I own and I'm happy to post it here for the fans of this thread. I will not post the final score of this game but I will provide a link to the Retrosheet Boxscore.

The Starting Lineups for September 20th, 1934 at Navin Field in Detroit

Ok, here is the game for the month of May. I am uploading this right now just in case I do not have time to do it tonight.

This game is from October 2nd, 1936 and it is an exhibition game between the visiting Chicago Cubs at the Chicago White Sox.

You see, back in those days Chicago would play a City Championship Series at the end of the season This was always played at the same time of the World Series unless if one of the Chicago teams was in the Series, which happened to the Cubs three times in the 1930's.

This is game two of the City Series of Chicago in 1936.

Batteries: For the Cubs, Lon Warneke pitching, Gabby Hartnett catching. For the White Sox, Monty Stratton pitching and Luke Sewell doing the catching.

A month sure flies by fast doesn't it? And if you are the Yankees you are glad the month of May is over with. But that's another story.

This thread is about Baseball on the Radio and the game for the month of June once again features the Chicago Cubs. But this time it is a regular season game and they are playing the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. The date is June 4th, 1957.

This is a good game to have. Pitching for the Dodgers is a young lefthander by the name of Sandy Koufax and his counterpart on the Cubs is right hander Dick Drott (27-46, 4.78 ERA in seven major league seasons.)

Ernie Banks is playing shortstop for the Cubs.

Duke Snider, Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella are playing for the Dodgers.

And there is one guy in the Brooklyn announcing booth you may recognize. His name is Vin Scully.

Enjoy!

I don't have many radio broadcasts, but here's one of the few I have managed to get a copy of - the 1960 World Series between the Pirates and the Yankees. The 1960 Pirates team featured eight all-stars but went into the Series an underdog against the strong Yankees squad of that year, featuring its own list of all-stars - Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard and Whitey Ford, to name a few. The Yankees went on to score more than twice as many runs as the Pirates did in the Series, but as we all know, that says nothing about the overall result. Listen for yourself to hear how the 1960 World Series played out.

Game 1: Art Ditmar vs. Vern Law

Game 2: Bob Turley vs. Bob Friend

Game 3: Wilmer Mizell vs. Whitey Ford

Game 4: Vern Law vs. Ralph Terry

Game 5: Harvey Haddix vs. Art Ditmar

Game 6: Whitey Ford vs. Bob Friend

Game 7: Bob Turley vs. Vern Law

Game 7 turned out to be a true baseball classic.

You can download it from here.

Enjoy!

A new month is upon us and another baseball game is ready for all of you. And since it is the month of July and All Star Game time, I give you for your listening pleasure the 1956 All Star Game that was played at Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC on July 10th of that year.

National League vs. American League

National League Starting Lineup

Johnny Temple, Cincinnati 2B

Frank Robinson, Cincinnati LF

Stan Musial, St. Louis RF

Ken Boyer, St. Louis 3B

Gus Bell, Cincinnati CF

Dale Long, Pittsburgh 1B

Ed Bailey, Cincinnati C

Roy McMillan, Cincinnati SS

Bob Friend, Pittsburgh P

American League Starting Lineup

Harvey Kuenn, Detroit SS

Nellie Fox, Chicago 2B

Ted Williams, Boston LF

Mickey Mantle, New York CF

Yogi Berra, New York C

Al Kaline, Detroit RF

Mickey Vernon, Boston, 1B

George Kell, Baltimore 3B

Billy Pierce, Chicago P

Here is the RETROSHEET link for the game. A lot of Hall of Famers played in this game.

Griffith Stadium in Washington

I do have one question about this game. I want to know why there were five Reds in the starting lineup? Cincinnati did have a good year in 1956 (Won 91, Lost 63) but finished in third place behind Brooklyn and Milwaukee.

This recording has no player introductions. It starts in the first inning when the leadoff hitter for the NL is at the plate, Johnny Temple. The game is broadcast from WGN in Chicago.

Here we go.

After this week's Yankees @ Dodgers series, here's a time-warp back to 1949, with games 3, 4 and 5 of the '49 Fall Classic with the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a copy of games 1 and 2 to add to it.

History was made in game 5 of the series, with it being the first World Series game finished under artificial lights. With the '49 Dodgers roster featuring Roy Campanella, Duke Snider and some guy named Jackie Robinson, and the Yankees having Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto and Joe DiMaggio, it was definitely a matchup for the ages.

You can download it from here.

Also, the 1941 All-Star Game. The 9th mid-summer classic took place in Briggs Stadium in Detroit. With a list of perennial all-stars on the rosters, if you don't know many of the players in this one, you don't know baseball.

Download from here.

Enjoy!

Well, the last one I have right now is the 1948 All-Star Game, after that, I'm pretty much all out.

I should have the Yankees 2009 playoff games from WCBS within the next few days. I already have the ALDS and think the ALCS is done, just need to get the World Series downloaded.

Well, here we are. A new month is here and it's time for another baseball game on the radio. This month we see the New York Giants visit the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. The date is August 31st, 1957 and this game was the middle game of the final three game series the Giants would ever play in Brooklyn.

Also, this month there is an added bonus. Here is the story of the 1967 Impossible Dream Boston Red Sox team. This is not a baseball game but it is a review of the 1967 Red Sox season narrarated by Ken Coleman that has a lot of highlights taken from the radio broadcasts. It's very well done. It is not that long to listen to because this was originally released on an LP record. In fact, here is the cover of the LP:

And, here is the LP...
