Game recap

It was a showcase of power between the Yanks and the Tigers as 23 runs were scored in today's game. The Yankees struck first in the second inning: Texeira led off with a base hit, Swisher then walked, and Posada hit a RBI double to make it 1-0. Martin followed with another RBI, then Porcello allowed back-to-back walks to Jeter and Granderson to make the score 4-0. Porcello was removed from the game as he went just 1.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, 6 runs and 3 walks. A-Rod hit a 2 RBI single off Schlereth to make it 6-0. But the Tigers struck back in the 3rd: after Burnett surrendered 3 straight hits to Peralta, Inge and Jackson, Martinez and Cabrera got back-to-back RBI singles, and Raburn added insult to injury with a 2 RBI double. The Yankees managed to score one more run in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to an errant throw by shorstop Johnny Peralta. But the Tigers tied in the 4th: after back-to-back singles by Avila and Ordonez, Guillen hit a 3-run bomb to tie the game. The Yankees got the lead back in the 5th as Schlereth walked both Swisher and Martin, then Gardner singled to load the bases. And with the bases loaded, Jeter hit into a fielder's choice, making the score 8-7; but the inning wasn't over: with 2 outs, the Grandy man delivered with a RBI single. The Yanks then scored one more run in the 6th to make it 10-7. But the Tigers weren't done yet: in the 7th, Peralta doubled to lead off the inning, he was then followed by Inge with a single. With men at the corners, Girardi decided to pull Burnett out of the game. he went 6, gave up 11 hits, 10 runs (8 earned) and struck out only 1. Even with Soriano on the mound, things didn't change: Jackson got a RBI single, then Martinez moved the runners over to second and third with a sac bunt. Soriano struck out Cabrera, and Raburn with 2 outs hit an easy fly ball to right but Swisher dropped the ball, allowing Jackson and Inge to score. The score was 10-10. The Yankees quickly got the lead back: Cano was walked, and Swisher got on base with a single, then Jorge Posada drove in the run with another single. In the 9th, Rivera came in to close the game, but Miguel Cabrera had other plans as he smashed the first pitch of the at bat into the seats, tying the game. Rivera then gave up one more hit, but got out of the inning with a double play. In the 9th, with Benoit on the mound, Jeter got a lead off walk, then Granderson singled and they both advanced thanks to a wild pitch. A-rod was walked to load the bases and Valverde was called in to pitch: he struck out Texeira but then gave up the winning base hit to Robinson Cano. The final score was 12-11. "It was a long game. Burnett didn't make his best start, and our bullpen wasn't that great" said Girardi "but our offense was great, we showed great patience at the plate, and managed to score 12 runs." The Yankees got 12 walks and 15 hits today. "First pitch fastball and next thing you know it's out of the park: a rough way to start the season" Said Rivera.
