They, like the Phillies, were the doormat of the AL East. During the early 70's, the MLB only had a total of 24 teams (12 in the AL and 12 in the NL). With this number of teams, even the "doormats" still had a few decent players. The Senators in 1971 was no exception. Frank Howard, Del Unser, Dick Bosman, Paul Lindblad, and Toby Harrah were decent players and if they played with teams such as the Tigers, Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Cubs or Dodgers, they could have given those teams the boost that they needed.
