Looks like the Homerun Derby trophy went through a bit of a transition period in the late 90s where MLB wasn't sure what the heck they wanted it to look like. After 1995, there was a new trophy.

100610_Bonds_h.jpg?itok=jli_hHdN&timesta

Then in 1997, there was another new one.

I couldn't find a picture of Griffey with the 1998 trophy, but it looks like they went to the new trophy design in 1999 and have largely kept it the same since.

Hey again BallFour :)

Awesome adds buddy! Never knew they changed it several times during those years. The one Bonds is holding is pretty cool tbh - very unique!

I wished they would have kept it like the one gifted in the early 90's or at least the Bonds version.

Heck yeah. I've got a bunch of just cool little anecdotes regarding trophies. For example, there were changes to the World Series Champions trophy from 1997 to 2000.

First up is the 1997 one. You can see the detail of the flags with each team's name on them.

21158a_lg.jpeg

Then in 1998, it went through a minor tweak, adding two more flags to represent Arizona and Tampa Bay. It stayed that way in 1999, shown here.

3693a_lg.jpeg

Then finally, in 2000, it underwent the makeover to the trophy that is in use today.

As for World Series MVP trophies, I did a little bit of Google research. The first picture evidence I could find of a player being presented a trophy immediately after the game is 1985, with Bret Saberhagen. He received this trophy, being shown here by 1987 World Series MVP Frank Viola.

ows_150959317291625.jpg

In 1988, MLB changed it up a little bit, as you can see here with Orel Hershiser.

orel-hershiser.jpg?format=500w

In 1991, they made a tweak to the trophy, including a real MLB baseball at the top of the trophy, as you can see here with 1992 World Series MVP Pat Borders.

The design held steady for years, until 2001, when Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling shared the new trophy, which is still in use today.

Before the advent of the on-field trophies, the winner of the World Series MVP from 1949 to 1985 received the Babe Ruth Award, which is still given to this day at the annual dinner for the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Up until 2007, it was strictly for World Series performance, but in 2007 it was expanded to include performance in the entire postseason. The first incarnation of the award, was a plaque, as seen here for 1956 World Series MVP Don Larsen.

Then in 1957, it was updated.

As you can see, the design hasn't changed much at all over the years.

Wow! I've never knew the how much the World Series MVP has changed over the years.

Definitely think the older versions before 2001 were so much nicer (same for the World Series Trophy before 2000)!

Agreed!

Just looked into some new information about League MVP awards, which is a really interesting story. Once the American League combined with the National League, the two leagues competed for a MLB-wide MVP. In 1910, Hugh Chalmers (president of Chalmers Motor Company) announced that he would give a brand new car to the player with the highest batting average at the end of the season. The batting race was between the disliked Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie of the Indians. Lajoie appeared to win the award on the last day of the season thanks to seven bunt singles. However, baseball commissioner Ban Johnson said that Cobb won anyway. As a result, Chalmers gave both men a new car.

In 1911, Chalmers created the Chalmers Award for each league, to be voted on by baseball writers from the MLB citites. The award was basically just a brand new car. Here's 1914 American League winner Eddie Collins.

After 1914, with the economy in a recession, the award was retired. There would be no MVP award again until 1922.

In 1922, the American League created a new award to honor the Most Valuable Player in the Junior Circuit. The award was voted on by the 8 baseball writers from the American League cities. The winner received a cash prize, and a bronze medal, shown below. However, the award was limited in that prior award winners were ineligible. The National League soon followed suit in 1924, but without the prior winner restriction. This led to Babe Ruth being only a 1-time MVP. The last American League MVP winner was in 1928 and the last National League winner under this format was in 1929.

Here's Dazzy Vance's NL MVP award from 1924.

In 1931, the Baseball Writers Association of America created a new award for each league that would remove the restrictive standards the American League had from 1922-28. The voting for the award is largely the same as what it currently is today, though the trophies did change a little bit. Here's a photo of the first American League MVP winner, 1931 MVP Lefty Grove.

I wasn't able to find any other pictures of this particular design, but this is a photo of Jimmie Foxx from either his first or second AL MVP award, either in 1932 or 33.

In 1935, the award was changed yet again, this time to a plaque (which you can see is a pretty clear influence on the award today). Here's 1935 AL MVP Hank Greenberg with Comissioner of Baseball Kennesaw Mountain Landis.

I had trouble placing when the plaque as we know it came into use. I was able to find this 1936 Lou Gehrig plaque, but I'm not sure of its authenticity.

Here's 1949 winner Ted Williams, where you can clearly see that this is the same reward that's used today.

That's a Beautiful award! I'm a big medallion fan so I might be a little biased in my fav's lol

Didn't like the subsequent versions until the latest one which is the standard now, but they were trying to modernize it so I get it.

The Cy Young award is interesting. It was started in 1956 and was awarded to the best pitcher overall in the Major Leagues from 1956-1966. In 1967, the award would go to the best pitcher in each league rather than overall. The award has stayed the same the entire time. Here's the first ever winner, Don Newcombe's from 1956.
