Mvp baseball: 2 way players/ohtani player setup, pitcher in DH lineup

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Longtime lurker & have been enjoying the mvp baseball 2005 mods and rosters at this site. I have tried searching for an answer on the forums, but did not see anything pertinent or am searching the wrong keywords, so trying this post.

For 2 way players such as Ohtani, I've normally see him on mods and rosters as 2 separate players (1 as a starting pitcher and 1 as a fielder instead of just 1 single player with the pitching and hitting attributes combined). I understood this separation was needed because if you had 1 single player with both attributes with a main position as a Starting pitcher, you could never insert a starting pitcher in your lineup as a DH. Or vise versa where if the main position was a fielder (e.x. right field), you could never insert a fielder as a starting pitcher. Especially since I play with DH turned on in both leagues.

However, I just played against the CPU having a Starting pitcher in their DH slot! Does anyone know if the user can do this or if this is just some CPU shenanigans?  Please see attached screenshots of the CPU's lineup with a SP in the DH slot.

I'm not sure if that's an error in the mod or something you can actually do. The only way I think you might be able to do it is the following. You'll have to go into the game and find Ohtani's unique roster_playerid.

This can be done in the data > database folder. First, you find the unique_team ID. This can be found in the team.dat file. Copy the unique_team ID for the Dodgers. Then, close out team.dat and open up roster.dat.

Do a Ctrl+F and paste the unique_team ID into the search bar. Now, you'll want to know where Ohtani is at in the pitching rotation. He could be SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4, or SP5. In some mods, he might be in the bullpen and that makes it a little trickier. But either way, find the corresponding position he's at. So it would now be unique_team ID plus his place in the pitching rotation. Congratulations, you found him! Now we go about changing his place in the lineup. you'll see 2 SP(number), then 3 will be -1. Change that -1 to 9. Also, change 7 from -1 to 9.

Now, the important bit here is to also remove the regularly inserted DH. so where it says 2 DH, you want 3 to be -1. Same as where 6 says DH, change that to -1.

DISCLAIMER: I have never tried this before. It might break your game. PLEASE BACK UP YOUR FILES BEFORE MESSING WITH IT.

Wow, thanks for the reply and explanation @BallFour. So, I followed the instructions, and in this case, pitcher ohtani was the sp3, and I edited the rosters.dat of that code line to 9 from -1. I also found the line with the DH, and edited those to -1, but unfortunately it returns a "null" in the lineup spot. So, no SP ohtani available in the lineup to select.

Please see the attached photos (1st of the line of code before altering for my records, and then the 2nd of the batting order in game that shows null where the DH should be).

Looking into the rosters through Mvpedit, the only difference I saw between brendan mckay and SP Ohtani was that mckay had a 2nd position listed as DH, so I added the 2nd position as DH for SP ohtani's profile. However that doesn't seem to make a difference as both mckay and SP Ohtani did not reflect that within the game using the game edit roster. It looks like if the primary position is a pitcher, then it won't accept a field position as a secondary.

Oh well, I'll just keep using 2 fantasy draft picks for ohtani :(

I also looked at McKay's roster.dat code line and nothing stands out. It was similar to SP ohtani's code line before altering.

Plus, this was through the fantasy draft and not the teams default rosters, so the lineups would not be tied to the dodgers since the draft mixes all the players and teams up. Open to checking anything else, thanks.

I tried one more thing and it worked, but it crashed the game. I put SP ohtani's secondary position as DH in Mvpedit. Did a fantasy draft, and let the CPU auto set the lineups and it brought SP Ohtani into the DH slot! However, playing a game with SP ohtani as the DH and as the starting pitcher, the top half of the inning went fine with him hitting, but the game crashed when it switched to the bottom half when the same ohtani would be pitching.

See pic for lineup proof. So close, but I guess 2 separate players are definitely needed.
