Bob Kennedy, who played for 16 seasons in the majors and later managed, died on April 7, 2005 in Mesa, Ariz. He was 84. A utility player, Kennedy debuted with the White Sox in 1939 at just 18 years old. He hit .254 in his career with 63 home runs and 514 RBI. His career also included a break of three years to serve in the military during World War II. His career included playing for the White Sox, Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit and Brooklyn. One of his most productive seasons came in 1949 when he hit .269 for the Indians with nine home runs and 57 RBI. He had a hit and an RBI in two at-bats in the 1948 World Series as the Indians beat Boston. He managed the Cubs from 1963-1965 and posted a 182-198 record in those seasons. In 1968, he managed Oakland to an 82-80 record. In 1977, he returned to the Cubs and served as the team's general manager.
