how do saves work? i've seen teams that lead by 5 and the closer gets a save.

a relief pitcher earns a save if he comes into the game with his team winning, and he then pitches the rest of the game and his team still wins. He must also meet at least one of the following criteria:

1. enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning

2. enters the game with the potential tying runner on base, at bat, or on deck

3. pitches for at least three innings.

you'll notice #1 and #2 say "enters the game" - so that means if the closer comes in in the top of the 8th inning or something like that, and it's a save-situation, but then in the bottom of the 8th, his team scores more runs, even though it wouldn't be a save-situation if he entered the game THEN, if he still closes out the game for the win he'd still get a save because when he ENTERED the game it was a save-situation.

a hold is when a relief pitcher comes into a game with his team leading and leaves the game without giving up the lead, but he doesn't qualify for the win or the save.

Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

(a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

(B) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or

© He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.
