Five Alive

Today's Match-Up: Jeff Weaver (9-4) vs. Brett Myers (5-6)

jeffcarl6kr.png

(Above: Weaver strikes out 8 on his way to 10th win, Right: Crawford helps out Weaver by driving in 2 on this triple.)

icon_la.gif Los Angeles has been on a role ever since the All-Star break, winning five games to pull within a half a game of first place in the National League West. "I'm very pleased with the way that our team has come together this year. It looked as if this season was going to be very dismal during the 10-game losing streak. But, so far, this season has turned out to be quite nice." This coming from manager Jim Tracy, as we were fortunate enough to talk with him after the game.

The Dodgers started their scoring in the second inning, with Jason Phillips driving in Andy Marte for his 20 RBI on the year to give L. A. an early 1-0 lead. They would score again in the third on a Cesar Izturis RBI single that brought in Carl Crawford who had hit a double in the at-bat before him. Two more would be added in the fourth, this time Phillips and Jeff Weaver would score on a Crawford 2-RBI triple to put the Dodgers up 4-0 through four innnings.

Philadelphia would try and get a comeback going in the fifth, but it was very short lived. With Pat Burrell hitting a solo homer, his tenth on the year that would cut the Dodgers' lead to 4-1. But that would be all that the Phillies would score as the Dodgers would win by that same score.

Not So Fast

(Above: Marte hits his fifth homer on the year in seventh, Right: Hillenbrand hits 2-run homer in sixth, his ninth on the year.)

icon_la.gif For the longest time, the Dodgers couldn't get anything going. As they were shutout for six innings at the beginning of the game. And Philidelphia took advantage of the situation and beat Los Angeles 3-2.

The Phillies started scoring early, as Micheal Barrett drove in Bobby Abreu on a double in the right-center gap to put the Phillies up 1-0. Two more runs would come across the plate for the Phils in the sixth on a Shea Hillenbrand two-run homer to increase their lead to 3-0.

In the seventh the Dodgers would make an attmept at a comeback, with Hee-Seop Choi and Andy Marte hitting solo homers (their fifth on the year). But it wouldn't be enough, as they would suffer their first loss since the All-Star break 3-2.

Two in a Row

olmedocarl5ik.png

(Above: Saenz hits 2-run homer in the fourth, Right: Crawford hits a homer to tie the game in the eighth.)

icon_la.gif It looked as if the Dodgers' were going to have this game in the bag, as Scott Erickson had four perfect innings to start off the game. But, he would lose it in the fifth, and lose the lead as well.

Los Angeles was the first to score, as Olmedo Sanez hit his eighth homer on the year in the fourth. The home run was a two run blast that would put the Dodgers up 2-0. But, that lead would be short lived, as Timo Perez would drive in two runs on a double that would tie the game at 2-2 through five innings.

Philadelphia would take the lead in the seventh on a Chase Utley RBI double bringing in Pat Burrell to put the Phils up 3-2. Carl Crawford wasn't ready to lose just yet, as he would tie the game up in the eighth on a solo homer, his second on the year.

But, in the bottom of the ninth, Britt Reames would give up a solo jack to Burrell that would win the game for the Phillies 4-3.

Injury Report: Olmedo Saenz suffered a strained hamstring and will be out of the lineup for nearly a week. His bat, against lefties, will be replaced with Hee-Seop Choi.

What Had Happened Was...

jeffmike9fh.png

(Above: Kent hits his sixth homer of the year in loss, Right: Cameron pumps his fist after his twelfth homer on the year.)

icon_la.gif After their third straight loss, Los Angeles has fallen from being only a half of a game out of first place in the NL West to three and a half games back. Don't be fooled by the score of tonight's game, either. It was a lot more one sided than it suggests.

Every Dodger fan knew that tonight was going to be a long one when Kazuo Matsui hit the first pitch that Derek Lowe threw out of the park for a lead-off homer. Then, in the second, Mike Cameron connected for his twelfth homer on the year to put New York up 2-0 after two.

The Dodgers would add a single run in the fourth on a Jeff Kent solo blast, his sixth on the year to put Los Angeles back in the game, 2-1. They would quickly be denied, as David Wright would hit a solo homer and Cliff Floyd would hit a two run job to give the Mets a commanding 5-1 lead.

They would add another run in the seventh on a Jose Reyes RBI single, driving in Matsui to put New York up 6-1. Los Angeles would try to comeback in the eighth, scoring two runs on RBIs from Kent and Hee-Seop Choi. But it wouldn't be enough as they would lose their third straight, this one 6-3 at the hands of New York.

Today's Transactions

As the trade deadline steadily approaches, the Dodger's made a trade with Philadelphia that involved both of their bullpens.

white.jpg

Gabe White was traded to Los Angeles today from the Phillies today. White hadn't played this year until recently, when the Phillies picked him up as a free agent. This year he has only pitched 1 inning, but in that one inning he didn't give up a run - only one hit. "The entire staff and I felt that we needed another lefty in our bullpen, seeing as we only had one before this trade. Plus, White is a seasoned veteran that should be a positive influence on our rather young bullpen and will provide us with another quality left handed pitcher." This coming from manager Jim Tracy as he explained today's trade.

ph_112030.jpg

Giovanni Carrara was dealt from the Dodgers to the Phillies today as he wasn't pleased with the playing time that he has been receiving. Carrara had been mediocre with the Dodgers, with a 2-3 record and a 4.24 ERA in 17 innings pitched.

Werth Propels Dodgers

werthodalis9ax.png

(Above: Werth hits two homers in the Dodgers blowout of the Mets, Right: Perez throws complete game three hitter tonight in win.)

icon_la.gif Los Angeles ended their three game losing streak tonight in striking fashion, pounding the Mets on their way to a 9-0 shutout. Odalis Perez was nearly perfect tonight, going the full nine innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five.

The Dodgers scored early and often, with Carl Crawford leading off the game with a triple to right center. He was driven in by Cesar Izturis' single to right, and Jayson Werth hit his first homer of the game to put Los Angeles up 3-0. Then, in the third, Werth would hit his second homer, driving in Crawford and Izturis to give the Dodgers a commanding 6-0 lead.

Los Angeles would add two more in the sixth and another in the seventh, which would give the Dodgers a 9-0 lead and eventual win over the Mets. Los Angeles will have to face Pedro Martinez, who is 12-0 on the season. He has been, by far, the best pitcher in the National League and is drawing a lot of CY Young hype.

A Tale of Two Jeffs

jeffx25sy.png

(Above: Kent connects for a solo jack in the sixth inning, Right: Weaver gives the Dodgers their second straight shutout.)

icon_la.gif The Los Angeles pitchers continued to be superb in their second straight shutout of New York. This time it was Jeff Weaver, going the whole game while only allowing five hits and striking out ten Mets.

The Dodgers would score their first run of the game in the second on a run scoring single by Ricky Ledee, driving in Jayson Werth. They would score again in the sixth on a solo homer off the bat of Jeff Kent, his seventh on the year.

Two more would score in favor of Los Angeles, with Carl Crawford driving in Weaver and then Cesar Izturis driving in Crawford. The Dodgers will now have to face off against the Cincinnati Reds who are currently 50-48, second in the NL Central.

Taken Down a Notch

randaledee0ie.png

(Above: Randa leads off the game with his 13th homer, Right: Ledee hits his first homer of the year in the fifth against Reds.)

icon_la.gif Los Angeles was brought back down to Earth tonight with a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. Jarrod Washburn had a couple of shakey innings to start the game, giving up three runs in the first three innings. But after those three innings, he was nearly unhittable.

The first pitch of the game, Washburn threw a hanging curve ball that Joe Randa hit about ten miles. That was his thirteenth on the year, and his second to lead off a game. Washburn gave up two more in the third on run scoring singles from Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. that would put the Reds up 3-0.

The Dodgers would get on the scoreboard in the fifth, with Ricky Ledee's first homer on the year. They would score again in the sixth, with Jeff Kent driving in Washburn that would cut the Reds lead to a slim 3-2 margin. Los Angeles had runners in scoring position with two outs in the seventh and eighth innings, but had nothing to show for it.

*Team News: Jayson Werth suffered a dislocated finger on his right hand and will be out for a couple of games. His spot in the lineup will be filled by Jason Grabowski. Thanks, I was never able to pitch good with him - so I had to get rid of him. And yes, I did send Dreifort down - he's not too pleased about it either...

Thanks, I don't know if Serge would want to talk about the Dodgers - considering they play in Los Angeles.... (maybe Daron though)

Cesar Does It All

izturisx27ba.png

(Above: Izturis barely beats Griffey's throw to score a run and Right: makes an INCREADIBLE diving catch to rob Kearns of a hit.)

icon_la.gif It didn't look as if tonight's game was going to go in the favor of Los Angeles. With Sean Casey hitting a mammoth homer in the first, his twenty-third on the year, it looked as if it was going to be a very long night.

But, it turns out that wasn't going to be the case. With the first pitch that Carl Crawford saw, he hit a triple down the right field line and then scored on a run scoring single by Cesar Izturis. This would tie the game up at 1-1, and then Izturis would score on another run scoring single, this time off the bat of Olmedo Saenz.

Another run would cross the plate in favor of the Dodgers in the third, when Pete Orr drove in Izturis to increase the Dodgers' lead to 3-1 through three innings. The Dodgers wouldn't score again until the eighth when Andy Marte drove in J. D. Drew to give the Dodgers the 4-1 win over Cincinnati.

Jeff to the Rescue

(Above: Marte makes an amazing play to save a run in eighth, Right: Kent hits solo homer in the ninth to win the game.)

icon_la.gif Tonight’s game was your typical, old fashioned pitcher’s dual. Neither team scored a single run until the sixth inning, and the Dodgers didn’t get a hit until the fourth. Unfortunately, neither pitcher were the pitchers of record in tonight’s game, as they both left with the game tied up.

The Dodgers drew first blood tonight on a Cesar Izturis sac-fly to right field, driving in Carl Crawford – who previously hit a triple, his sixteenth on the year. It seemed as this was going to be enough, buy Cincinnati mounted a comeback in the eighth. With pinch hitter, Ken Griffey Jr., bringing in D’Angelo Jimenez on a sac-fly to tie the game up at 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Kent was the first batter to face Dave Weathers in that inning. The first pitch that Kent saw was a hanging curveball that he hit over the center field fence to give Los Angeles the 2-1 win over the Reds in striking fashion.

Homers Carry Dodgers

cesarolmedo3qo.png

(Above: Izturis makes a fantastic diving catch to save a run, Right: Saenz hits an amazing blast to give the Dodgers the win.)

icon_la.gif It looked as if Eric Milton was going to throw a perfect game against the Dodgers today. Going five complete perfect innings, until he gave up the game tying homer in the sixth inning to Jason Phillips, his third of the year.

Cincinnati's lone run was scored in the second on an arrant throw from Olmedo Saenz that allowed D'Angelo Jimenez to score. This brings us to the seventh inning, where the Dodgers would score three runs - one off a solo homer from Saenz to give the Dodgers the 2-1 lead.

Two more runs would score that inning, with Pete Orr and Carl Crawford driving in runners to put the Dodgers up 4-1 for good.
