hsa613
Is it me or is everybody having problems with the site for the last 12 hours or so. Everytime I try to download something the speed at which it dowloads is exremely slow. I'm in Korea so maybe its just me.
maxbjr
Depends what time of the day you're trying to download. I live on the east coast USA, around 4 - 6pm est & 10pm - 12am est are slow times for me. Any other time downloads run just fine. It might be your ISP's server maitenance time, or it could be because everyone else is trying to download at that time.
Ghostdog
I'm having the same speed problem. Right now i'm downloading a stadium with 3,6mb at a rate of 5kb/s. Seems like the server is very busy, cause the entire site is awkwardly lame...
Lucas
Its not just the downloads.. for me at least. It took me about 5mins to see the main site, but after its been much faster.
The Big O
It's not just you guys. The site is deathly slow for me too and this is without the 06 mod on the site right now. I think it's time to start limiting downloads on the site. It's like almost 3 AM EST here and the site is still crawling. I propose the following: Newbies have a certain download limit to start, something like 50 MB per day while established members would have no limit. To become established one would have to, submit a mod or reach 100 posts or contribute at least $20 to the site. Also no downloading or forum viewing is allowed unless you register with the site. This will cut down on those people who are lurking that just come to the site to download mods. Bottom line is if you are going to use the bandwidth then you have to contribute to the site in some shape or form. We gotta do something otherwise this situation is gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better especially once the finished '06 mod goes online. What are other people's thoughts? RedSoxFox7
I'd suggest distributing the final MLB06 update using bittorrent. It'll save a lot on site bandwidth, and based on current download speeds, it couldn't possibly be slower.

I totally agree with you Big O that something has to be done to keep this great site enjoyable for the whole community. I also feel your suggestions, but where would you draw the lines in terms of who is an established member and who is not? Unfortunately not everybody is gifted like the modders on this site in order to contribute a mod for the community. I can only speak for myself but i'm so grateful that i'm able to revamp my game with these awesome mods without having the skills to mod on my own, that it would be a major setback if contributing a mod would become a criteria for participating on this community. As for the post count I can smell spamming. I mean let's not be naive 'cause people will spamm the threads in order to drive their post counts up. IMO that would be to much drama for the admins and pretty annoying for those people who come to this place on a regular daily basis to check out what's going on or to simply take a sip from the fountain of knowledge -which is actually my approach to this site. Forcing people to get a certain amount of posts can backfire on this whole thing... Just my 2cents...

I agree 100% with you. Now if MVP Mods were a site that you'd have to pay to join, it would be different. But yeah, this is only going to get worse. Forcing people to get a certain amount of posts can backfire on this whole thing... Just my 2cents... That's a good point too, but this is where the mods will do their jobs. After all this time on here, the mods here know what spam is and we can stop it before it gets out of control. That will be done by stern warnings and finally, if need be, suspensions. What I am trying to say is, yes, there would be some initial spamming. But we will be all over those people that try this tactic and they won't be doing it for long. The other established members would alert the moderating staff as to who is spamming and we would then deal with it. Trust me, spamming is not tolerated now and it won't be in the future. It's been tough on here the past few days. While waiting for a page to load last night, I was able to rotate my tires on my car and then give it a wash and wax. :? It is frustrating for everyone and believe me, Trues wants to fix this as quickly as possible.
fenway389
Are you guys sure the problem is due to "over" downloading? I'm asking because it's around 8:15 am EST and according to the "Who Is Where" side bar, there are a total of 32 people visiting right now and only 18 of them are at the downloads section. Forgot to mention, I tried a download and it was still extremely slow.
RobAtPace
well... perhaps mirroring/bittorrents is the answer to the speed of the actual site/forums-- get the DL'able material off the servers.
RobAtPace
also... with the traffic this website gets, what about a sidebar advertisement to supplement the income to pay for the bandwidth? i know it is noble to have advertisement free websites in the time of commercial whoring... but with a site providing this type of services/downloads -- perhaps it could benefit the speed/life of our community? perhaps even something like what baseball-reference.com does with sponsoring downloads? I notice many times that they are downloading a lot of stuff at the same time.
ogerilla
If you limit the amount of stuff "newbies" can download you WILL kill this site. New users are what keep ANY business going. You DO NOT have to host the torrent on a torrent site. You can host the @30k torrent on your site an dramatically reduce your bandwidth usage. A very large and growing element of the open source community uses bittorent to distribute thier files. More and more game companies are hosting patches as torrents. Many of the newer clients have trackerless downloading also, so that wouldn't even be an issue. Your fear of using torrents is pathetic. The excuse you gave for it is ignorant. Before you summarily dismiss options that could keep your site up, why don't you do a little research.

RobAtPace
I concur... Bittorrent is utilized by Redhat and other large communities for it's bandwidth sharing capabilities. For instance... RobAtPace is looking for MVP2006 - a 300mb file- with bittorrent only those who share/volunteer their file help the cause and it directly takes the strain off this community's servers. All you have to do is provide a starting point, a http link, on your forum/server. ** of course there is illegal files shared on bittorrent, but the same holds true for http and ftp site- like this one ** I have a slow server [cable] so I couldn't efficiently mirror the download section, but myself and 30 other members could allow others to take bits and pieces of the 300mb file without comprimising speed. and in the end it is going to be quicker then this websites lagged servers. MarkB
I actually like the idea of a torrent-based download system, but only as an alternative for larger files. The only problem will be finding people that will seed. For instance, any files under, say, 20MB, could be stored here, while anything over has a .torrent file associated with it. So things like the MVP '06 mod and Total Classics would have a .torrent file to use rather than the current file link stored on the MVPMods servers, while smaller downloads such as stadiums could be stored here. Of course, there could also be .torrent links for files under 20MB to give a choice on where you want to download the file from.
big shmooz
I am just wondering what caused this whole issue to begin with. After all last year we had people downloading too & it never got anywhere near this bad. I am wondering if this is in fact a server problem on the end of the providers. Trues
That is an idea with merit, I am suprised you let unregistered users download anything. Unregistered users do not have access to download anything. They never have.
