It's a good chance that Garcia is done for the Phils. Apparently his shoulder's a mess, and there's a good chance that his rotator cuff is torn. It might not be final, but most of the stories have the line, "He's probably thrown his last pitch in his brief Phillies career," so I'd think he's done. Not to mention that 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA isn't going to keep him on the roster anyhow.

EDIT: Daily News Live reported that it's a torn labrum and a partially torn rotator cuff. Garcia is seeking an opinion other than surgery, but is likely shelved for the year.

Juan Encarnacion's career may be over. Let's keep an eye on this.

Juan Encarnacion remains in the hospital after suffering a severe eye injury Friday, and there's doubt whether he'll ever be able to play baseball again.

Encarnacion may have suffered a permanent loss of vision when he was hit in the left eye by Aaron Miles' foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle Friday. "It's the worst trauma I've seen. Absolutely," said team doctor George Paletta said. "You hope the best for Juan, but he suffered a severe injury with a very guarded prognosis. Paletta said the eye socket was essentially crushed on impact and that the optic nerve had sustained severe trauma. Reconstructive surgery may not take place for several days while doctors wait for swelling to subside.

Russ Ortiz out next season

Russ Ortiz will miss all of next season after surgery to repair his flexor tendon revealed that he also required a Tommy John procedure to reconstruct his MCL.

Before the surgery, doctors discussed the contingency with Ortiz and he signed off on having the ligament reconstructed if warranted. "Russ was adamant that he wants to keep pitching," trainer Dave Groeschner said. "This will give him the best chance to do that."

Brendan Donnelly out next season

Red Sox transferred RHP Brendan Donnelly from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Donnelly will miss most of 2008 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
