let's just say hypothetically that i recorded video through the process of creating a cyberface. and let's just say hypothetically that the videos together are 1.2 Gb in size, and that's the smallest i can compress without losing the ability to see what is happening...is it still worth it? i need to know before i decide to go in and add in captions and type up the step by step instructions.

unless someone has an idea to shrink the files even more somehow. they're already in divx format.

i think it would be best to just leave it as one file. just start the upload tonight when you go to bed and then in the morning post a link to the file. if people dont want to wait for the file to download then thats there fault.

yeah, i probably won't be splitting them up. that's quite a bit of work. i guess i'll continue with it then. i managed to zip it up and compressed it down to 540 mb.

my quote from eamods:

well then i guess i will continue working on them. i have them recorded and just need to go in and add in captions to go along with the instructions. be warned though, i tried to be thorough, so it's alot of reading and pausing along the videos due to my lack of skills at video editing.

as of now, i managed to record an hour worth of footage. you can't imagine how much space that took up at full resolution. so i've been working on compressing it, almost every format i could think of without giving up two things: 1. resolution to the point you can't read anything 2. smoothness of the video. most compressions either made it so you can't see anything, or that it was so choppy you couldn't follow along.

so far, i've managed to compress it all down to 1GB in divx format. it's so far the best that i've found. i've tried compressing everything down into dvd, but i was using nero and even tried intervideo software to convert, and the results were the same: blurry footage. so if ANYONE knows a better way for me to decrease file size without sacrificing the two above mentioned, please do let me know. i will continue to work on it until then. it'll take several hours to do all of it and i happen to be going out of town this week, so be patient.

if this stuff is reliable, i may do more for specialized stuff.

progress:

actual file sizes-1.2gb of video, word documented instructions

compressed with winrar-about 500 mb download

well this is enough for me. i've already started working on it. i spent about 2 hours last night working on chapter 3 of the videos. i'll keep you updated. but since this project is now official for me, i went ahead and changed the theme of the thread, so that anyone can post their tips on making faces here. hopefully one of the admins reads this and is able to move it to the right area of the forums.

AAAAAAHHH! stop asking me! :) every time you ask me, i have to take the time to reply, which further delays my progress. it'll be done when it's done. i already said i was outta town last week (didn't i?) and i just got back. it'll be done before the new year, i promise...maybe.

but seriously, it's getting done one way or the other. patience. i sure hope this thing doesn't just turn out to be a total let down :)

  • 2 weeks later...

tutorial is all finished up. just uploading it right now. it's been loading the file for over an hour now. the files ended up at 1gb, and zipped up it's roughly 600mb, so it's taking awhile. i'll let you know when it's up and pending approval.

okay finally uploaded. had a hell of a time with it. for some reason i couldn't upload it. so i split the file up into three files and uploaded them to megaupload. so until someone here can help me figure out why i can't upload it, it'll just have to do.

post all comments and requests here. good luck! pending approval.

YOu must be able to play Divx movies to watch these. It is encoded with codec 5.1.1, so you

need to have that version or higher to view them. Ignore the watermarks. I'm using the free

version of the recording software to do this for now. Sorry but my video editing skills are

not fully enhanced yet, so please learn to use the pause button to read the captions.

Print out the Instructions to follow along. There are on screen prompts to help, but there are

a lot more tips in the instructions.

The list of programs are hyperlinked. If you don't know what that means, simply hold Ctrl and

click on the name of the program and it will link you to it.

There are tons of people to credit for helping modders make cyberfaces. In particular, without

jogar's cyberface tutorial, most of us wouldn't be doing this. Secondly, with krawhitham's 2x

faces, it has brought the playing field up two notches.

These videos are not all inclusive. I am taking you through the processes I go through when

making a cyberface with a high quality photo. It's a different game with a crappy photo, so

play with it. As you will see, there's a hand full of tools and tips I use, with no particular

order. You'll see that I will make changes and go back and redo things as I make these faces.

In other words: DON'T GIVE UP! It's a painful process, but after doing over 150 faces, I've

finally got some techniques down that I'm comfortable with. But believe me, I learn something

new each time. I am hoping this tutorial will do one of three things:

1. those who don't know how to, can get a start on learning how to do these

2. those who do know how, will learn something to improve their faces

3. for god sakes, pay attention to detail! i know that these aren't going to be perfect. but

PLEASE, for the love of me, pay attention to your blending, to your colors, to the mapping,

to the shape and sizes...anyone can slap a picture on the texture and call it a cyberface.

but we want to get the best quality face for each player, so PREVIEW your mods first for

review before every one of you releases 39 variations of derek jeter.

but lastly, realize that some faces are going to be tough, and sometimes what you get is just

best that can be done, so stop complaining! because now, you have noting to complain about.

i'm hoping that with this tutorial, no one will be able to say they can't make a cyberface.

And lastly, this info is based on my experience with these for the past 200 faces I've done.

I am by no means any sort of expert on it. If there is any information that is incorrect,

please do inform me. otherwise i'm sure plenty of other modders out there can lend a few

secrets of their own. post all tips, questions, concerns, or requests in my thread.

And I stress:

If you have other questions, comments or requests for other techniques, post them in my thread. Otherwise, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, preview your cyberfaces for critique before uploading them. What I don’t want to see is 300 more Chase Utley faces. I want to see the best available in the downloads. This tutorial wasn’t meant to give permission to upload a bunch of crappy faces just because you were able to make one. Let’s concentrate on the quality. Good luck!

for those who were curious, i used Bulent's Screen Recorder to record these videos. it comes with another program called movie lab to edit the videos to add captions and such. sorry, but i only used the trial version, hence the watermarks. didn't feel like spending the money yet, so you can either buy me the license or just live with the watermarks for anymore tutorials i record. you can get it here: http://www.thesilver.net/

yes, i've tried other various screen recorders, including camtasia...didn't like any of them. the problems that arose with the others were either, poor quality, choppy videos, buggy, slowed down my computer, or user control. i liked this one the most because it mainly had a high quality recording, while maintaining a smooth recording. plus i liked the area at the bottom for captions. adobe has a program out too, but i didn't try it, nor was i ready to hand out the cash for it yet.

oh, i forgot to mention that detail in the tutorial...if you're new to this, start with an easy face...no smiles, closed mouth, looking straight on. and hopefully someone with an easy shaped face too. just for starters.

Homer, let me ask you something. Now when I extract my files from the models.big with biggui the .ord is 44KB and when I turn the ordtoo and edit the model and all that good stuff, I then use the otoord the ord goes to 54KB. Is this normal? Cause my game is crashing every time.
