I picked up a Steam Deck (which is quite awesome) and wanted to see if I could get MVP working on it. It's basically a handheld gaming computer that can play the latest AAA games, serve as an emulator for older gaming systems and adding older computer games - like MVP 2005.

It was pretty simple.

  1. I just copied my EA Sports directory from my computer to a folder on steam deck over the network
  2. Added the game to Steam as a non-steam game
  3. This one is important. Click the Compatibility Mode for the game to use their Proton, version 7.x works.

That's it.  The game just worked and was smooth, including the Total Classics I have.

The controller layout wasn't perfect. So I created a profile, found where it was on the Steam Deck and copied over my profile and the Xbox config files to that folder from Windows and it worked exactly like my xbox controller, with my profile.

So now I can easily play any version of MVP/TC on the go (without lugging around a laptop and controller).

I think that's pretty awesome!

If you want to push to a TV, you just need a USB-C -> HDMI cable/converter.

I know some people around here had trouble getting MVP to work on Windows 10+.  Using a Steam Deck is a rather cheap alternative ($400 for the lowest version).  Or you can install the free Steam OS on a computer you have.

Hope this helps someone.

Also got Madden 08 to work:

This is pretty neat!

It's always worked under emulation on Linux but I'm pumped to know it can run on the Steam Deck.

Just want to point out that there is nothing functionally wrong with running MVP as it will still run even on a newer OS like Windows 11, but the secret sauce is being able to break the SafeDisc copy protection for the game. Once you do that, it will run on literally anything these days, since there's no mechanism to authenticate your copy of MVP at all.

Sidenote, even though the game itself has long been considered abandonware, there's resources all over the internet dating back 17 years that would help anyone in getting past the copy protection, but providing any links to those resources on this site will get you banned (because we'd be talking about piracy, which is against site guidelines).

Hello,

I just became a member of MVP mods today. I found this thread after I already installed the PS2 emulation. It runs well enough but I am BLOWN AWAY by the amount of stadiums, uniforms, and the MVP 13 mod as well. My ambition is to run and test all the mods because MVP 2005 IS the game.

I assume that I will simply build a folder with the game + mods and that will work? Total novice here, any advice or directions to resources would be helpful.
