Neal roughed up, but Rays bats punish O's

Zac Neal had possibly his worst outing of the season so far, but the Rays bats came alive unusually for Neal to give the Rays the 6-3 win.

The Rays got off to the right start for Zac Neal with Chris Kelvarr hit an RBI single in the first, scoring Lambda Zeta.

They didn't hold the lead for long, as Kevin Millar hit a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up.

J.R House hit an RBI single and Brian Roberts hit a sacrifice fly in the 2nd for the 3-1 O's lead.

It seemed as though it was going to be another tough luck loss for Neal, but in the 5th it all changed, with Ronnie Reyes hitting a 2-out, 2-run single to lock it back up.

Mickey Stedfunk produced his first big hit for a few games hitting a tie-breaking RBI double in the 7th to again score Lambda Zeta.

The floodgates opened with Ronnie Reyes and Dave Pudge each notching RBI hits later in the inning.

Scott Moore and Jai Waddell combined to pitch a scoreless 7th, Ben DeCoste pitched a perfect 8th, and Mike Philsphan gave up 2 hits in the 9th but recorded another save.

W: Neal (4-3) L: Trachsel (2-5) S: Philsphan (8)

NOTABLE RAYS PERFORMERS:

L Zeta 3-5 2 runs scored

M Stedfunk 3-5 2B RBI

R Reyes 3-4 3 RBIs

Another Rays rally leads to sweep.

2 bases-loaded walks in the 6th plated the tying and winning runs for the Rays as they took down the O's 3-2.

The game again started poorly for the Rays with Brian Roberts hitting a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 1st and Jay Gibbons tacking on an RBI single in the 4th for a 2-0 lead against Jason Blizzard.

Michael Haylock cut the lead with an RBI single in the 5th and Bedard's rocky 5th inning lead to the go-ahead runs for the Rays and Jason Blizzard never looked back.

The bullpen held the one-run buffer for Blizzard who did not come out for the 7th. Frank Duffy, Scott Moore and Ben DeCoste all held the Rays in check and Mike Philsphan struck out the first two in the 9th and Jay Gibbons grounded out to end it and give Philsphan his 3rd consecutive save.

Matchups:

Game 1: A Pridham (3-3, 2.47) vs AJ Burnett (3-3, 3.40)

Game 2: L Williams (1-2, 2.98) vs J Thomson (1st Appearance of 2007)

The Rays head north of the border to face the Jays who are 0.5 games ahead of the Rays in 2nd place in the east.

The 2 teams had a good battle earlier in the season at Tropicana Field but the Jays came out on top. The teams sit in 3rd and 2nd respectively and will need to pull out some good play to try and catch the AL East leading Yankees.

PLAYER TO WATCH:

M Sandoval, had a tough time in the O's series, was the Rays standout in the earlier series against the Jays.

Pridham knocked around in Game 1 loss.

The start was awkward for Adam Pridham and AJ Burnett dominated the Rays order as the Blue Jays defeated the Rays 6-3.

Pridham gave up 2 homers in the first inning, a solo shot to Lyle Overbay and a two-run long ball to Troy Glaus, and the Rays were on the back foot from the word go.

Lambda Zeta, a consistent performer, hit an RBI double in the 3rd to make it 3-1.

Vernon Wells responded in the 5th with a sac fly to extend the lead to 4-1.

Back-to-back RBI doubles in the 6th by Adam Lind and John McDonald made the lead 6-2 after Dave Pudge's RBI fielder's choice out in the top of the inning.

Michael Haylock added an RBI in the 9th but it was not enough, as the Rays lost ground on both the Jays and the Yankees.

W: Burnett (4-3) L: Pridham (3-4)

NOTABLE RAYS PERFORMERS:

M Haylock 3-5 RBI

R Reyes 2-3

The Wright stuff: Wright does it all in Rays win.

Andrew Wright had a 3-run double to break open the 1-0 game and made a spectacular defensive play as the Rays turned their fortunes around to defeat the Jays 4-0.

Not to be outdone, Lucas Williams turned in a magnificent outing, throwing a complete-game, 4 hit shutout, striking out a 2007 team best 6 batters.

Tim Huss' RBI single in the 2nd was the only score in the battle between Williams and John Thomson until Wright cleared the bases in the 7th.

W: Williams (2-2) L: Thomson (0-1)

NOTABLE RAYS PERFORMERS:

A Wright 2-5 3 RBIs

T Huss 1-4 RBI

L Williams 9.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Drogalis gets 5th win on back of big offense.

The Rays piled on 8 runs, including 4 in the 1st as the Rays routed the Jays 8-1 to earn the series win.

Michael Haylock led off the 1st with a sinking fly ball that bounced over the head of Alex Rios and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Haylock to circle the bases. The official scorer ruled the play an error and Haylock got no credit for what was at least a single.

Mickey Stedfunk made sure a HR appeared on the boxscore at the end of the first drilling a massive shot to right center for a 2-0 lead. The Rays would proceed to load the bases after the homer and Dave Pudge stroked a 2-run single to give Tampa a 4-0 lead before Drogalis hit the hill.

Drogalis would not disappoint in search of his team leading 5th win, throwing 8 innings of 1 run ball, surrendering 7 hits in the process.

Michael Sandoval's 2 out homer after Mickey Stedfunk's sacrifice fly in the 5th chased Zambrano after 6 runs in 5 innings.

Aaron Hill's homer in the 5th ensured there would be no shutout, but the Rays tacked on 2 more for good measure in the 9th via Lambda Zeta's 2 bagger and Chris Kelvarr's groundout.

W: Drogalis (5-2) L: Zambrano (2-1)

Im having a hard time at the plate right now :(

Yeah, I wish a lefty started every game, you absolutely own lefties.

If I can take a few more pitches with your player, I'm sure you'll get some more hits.

The Rays receive offensive boosts with the returns of LF Matthew Polites and SS Johnluke Chaparro.

PLAYER TO WATCH:

JL Chaparro- Was a consistent performer for the Rays before he went down two weeks ago. It will be interesting to see how he performs after the layoff.

Unlucky 13th: Rays lose in extras.

Matthew Polites' error would loom large for the Rays as the misplayed flyball allowed the tying run to score in the 6th and Mike Philsphan would eventually lose the game, surrendering a 2-run homer to Jason Botts as the Rays lost to Texas 3-1.

Starter Zac Neal was masterful, pitching very economically in allowing just an unearned run in 9 innings. He also broke Lucas Williams strikeouts per game record with 7.. The pitch count was low enough and he stayed on for 2 outs in the 10th before being relieved by Michael Johnson.

Johnson was ineffective to say the least, putting two on in the 11th when Philsphan came in for only the 2nd time this year in a non-save situation.

He sat the remaining Texas hitters down in order, and allowed only one hit in the 12th.

The 13th provided the dramatics, with Michael Young hitting a double to right-center to lead off the inning. Some good fielding by HFLR prevented Young from taking 3rd.

Philsphan retired the next two hitters but he tried to blow a fastball by Botts and he teed-off sending it way into the LF seats.

Chris Kelvarr hit a HR for the Rays in the 2nd.

W: Otsuka (1-1) L: Philsphan (0-2) S: Gagne (7)
