Opening Day 2007 Preview- Devil Rays @ Yankees, Yankee Stadium 1:05 PM

All eyes fall upon The House That Ruth Built today as America catches its first glimpse of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays new home-grown talent. A tough first assignment faces these budding rookies as they take on the might of the AL East, baseball's superpower, the New York Yankees.

On the mound for the D-Rays will be Adam Pridham a right hander with solid 2 and 4 seam fastballs, a nice changeup, and a nasty AJ Burnett style knuckle-curve. The only concern is how whether he can handle the pressure on baseball's biggest stage- against the Yankees at the Stadium. He will oppose the electric Chien-Ming Wang.

D-Rays fight to the end, but take 4-1 loss on Opening Day

Anticipation mounted as a packed house at Yankee Stadium watched as Chien-Ming Wang threw the first pitch to Michael Haylock to get the new season underway for both sides. The anticipation soon turned to cheers as Wang struck-out the first two hitters and retired Mickey Stedfunk on a groundout to end the first.

The first 2 innings went smoothly for D-Rays starter Adam Pridham as he breezed through the heart of the Yankee order.

The bottom of the third however was a different story, with both sides yet to record a hit, Jorge Posada deposited a 1-1 fastball into the crowded short porch in right to give the Yankees the upper hand. 2 pitches later, Robinson Cano doubled the Yankee lead, taking a hanging change into the upper deck.

After being blanked the first time through the order, the D-Rays finally put a hit on the board in the 4th with Lambda Zeta's single to center. 2 batters later, Johnluke Chaparro added another hit.

Derek Jeter hit an opposite field 2-run shot in the 5th and Jason Giambi's single to lead off the 6th chased starter Adam Pridham after a disappointing outing.

Michael Sandoval tried desperately to rescue his team from defeat narrowly missing a home-run down the line and batting in the only D-rays run with a Sac Fly in the 9th.

With a man on first and two down in the 9th, Joe Torre brought in Mariano Rivera to try and nail down the win. He started shakily, walking Dave Pudge and allowing a single to Matthew Polites to load the bases. This brought Hector HFLR to the plate as the go-ahead run. The rally fell short with HFLR grounding to short to end the game.

W: Wang (1-0) L: Pridham (0-1)

Notable D-Rays Performances:

Zeta 2-4

Chaparro 2-4

Polites 2-4

Mickey Stedfunk gives us his best Superman impression to rob Doug Mientkiewicz of a hit.
