Back In Black: A 2009 Chicago Whitesox Franchise

Well, here we are with a new baseball season underway, and the Franchise bug has hit me. Many will remember my '07 MVP dynasty with the Cubs which I was unable to finish, do to real-life concerns. That was fun to do while it lasted because JoeRudi was running a Cubs 'chise himself at the same time. I couldn't keep up with him and those immortal Photoshop skills of his though. :)

Anyway, I've played MLB 2k9 post-patch enough to want to do a 162-game 'chise with it. Is the game pefect? No. Do many hate it for various reasons? Yes. But since the patch and JR's sliders (+ some minor tweaks of my own), it plays good enough for me.

Although I'm a die-hard Cubbie, I wanted to run with a different team this year. So with the Cubbies once again in the sure hands of JoeRudi, I have made an exodus to The South Side and hooked up with the "Guys in Black".... The Chicago WhiteSox. Just played the opening series with the Royals, and it was a blast.

As some of the 'old-timers' will know, I have my main Dynasty page over at a site called dynastymanager.com and it is pretty in-depth. I will post a summary of each series in this thread though, and encourage all those who decide to follow, to check out the DM page as well for more in-depth coverage.

Due to real-life demands, this is not a dynasty that will be updated daily... just don't have the time. I intend to play 2 series a week though, and post full updates. I'm in no rush with this one, as I was my Cubs' one. I think that is where I got discouraged, because I couldn't keep it updated on a daily basis. Well, I'm in this one for the long haul, and I'm stressing quality over quantity this time. For those that decide to follow, it will be a slow journey, but I'm sure you will enjoy the ride. ;)

Started the 'chise with Snash's last roster set before he and others started the Community Roster project. So if you see something that doesn't quite jive with what is going on in the real MLB, don't worry. Still concerned about too many major injuries happening early in the seaon, so I'm starting with injuries OFF and will turn them ON about 2-3 months into the season.

As always, any feedback, constructive criticism, etc... is welcomed.

Well, enough of my blabbing... let's get the season rolling.

Dynasty Update: 17 April 2009

Opened up the season at home against the Royals, and the Guys in Black put a 'hurtin on them. Carlos Quentin was a one-man wrecking crew, and John Danks pitched a gem in Game 3 of the series. As you will see, I hit the ball very well... maybe a little too well (future slider adjustment?) I'm going to hold off until after the Minnesota series, it was against the Royals after all.

I'm floored. I was asking about you today in the shoutbox, as it seemed you had disappeared. Now I know what you've been up to. For those that haven't seen your work, I can guarantee this will be a top notch presentation. This guy Maestro writes like the Shakespeare of baseball.

Back In Black. Absolutely genius.

I am so looking forward to this. Good luck, my friend, I will be beside you all the way until October. :D

(no pressure, of course)

Good to see a White Sox franchise. I thought about controlling the ChiSox and the Cards and alternating between playing/simming games (every other one, like I usually do) and seeing if I could get them both to the WS. (I did a similar thing with KC and StL in 2k8, but ended with a 'corrupted file').

The Sox have an interesting team. JUst when you think they're too old ... they might not be. Pitching with Danks and Floyd has to be fun.

I'm following. Holy crap, I just noticed you have a whole 'nother link/page with this. Geez, get down with your bad self or whatever expression fits the bill.

Update: 20 April 09

The Guys in Black sit atop the Division in 1st place tied with Cleveland at 5-1. Minnesota showed some heart, and stole game 3 in the series to end our perfect season. The bullpen just imploded.

Carlos Quentin's hot start was rewarded, with him being named AL Player of the Week for April 5-11th.

Ozzie has made his 1st major roster move. He has benched Wise, and named Anderson the starting CF. You saw this coming, if you read Ozzie's cryptic statement after the KC series.

As always, head over to my DM page for in-depth coverage and stats. We are hitting the road and traveling to Motown to take on the Tigers for a 3-game series.

I love your DM 'chise page, one of the best presentations I've seen! Do you manually update all those stats/standings after every series?

Thanks for checking out the DM 'chise page Wicked. ;)

Yeah, I update those stats after every series. Little time consuming though, but I'm getting it down to an exact science. This full update, took less time than my first. Still learning where I can cut corners, do things once & not have to go back again, etc... This is where I wish I had some of the utilities for MVP when it comes to gathering stats. Oh well, Baby steps... Baby steps. :)

Like I said in the beginning though, I wanted this to be heavy on the info, so I'm in no rush. Tell the truth, setting up the page/updates is almost as fun as playing the game. Just trying to make it entertaining. Having a blast with the Guys from the South Side so far.

Again, thanks for taking the time to check things out man. (And for the brilliant idea.) ;)

I see that KC is consistent, home & on the road ...

A little different start than the current major league season.

Yeah. :D

Did you see how the NL West is playing out so far? I think that's pretty true to form, so far. My cross-town brothers are handling their business so far, and for all you Cardinal fans.... I don't know what LaRussa has got them boys doing. :o

Guys in Black are glad to leave Motown behind. They drop 2-out-of-3 to the Tigers as they ran into rookie Rick Porcello in Game 1. Porcello was as advertised, as he pitched 6 innings, allowing the Sox no runs and only 3 hits.

Game 2 saw the Sox bounce back behind the arm of Danks, and the big bat of J. Thome. Danks tossed his second consecutive complete game and improved to 2-0. Detroit had no answer for Thome as he had a 4-for-5 night.

Game 3 saw the Sox bullpen implode. Contreras handed them a 3-run lead and the Tigers shelled the bullpen for a 6-spot in the 7th. Needless to say, Ozzie was not a happy man.

The Sox travel down to sunny Florida to play a 4-game series against the 1st-place Rays, in perhaps the ugliest stadium in all of baseball. With the state of the bullpen, Ozzie is hoping just for a series-split.

As always, head over to the DM page for full coverage.

I think I'll try the series update instead of game-by-game. THat's what I've usually done in the past. I find that I enjoy playing the game more than I like making daily updates.

Good luck in TB. I like Ozzie being Ozzie.

Has he called out Kenny Williams yet? *grin*

Thanks CC11. Yeah, the series update works best for me. Lets me enjoy playing the game, while not worrying about "Man, right after this game, I got to get all the pics, articles, stats.... update and posted".

As for Ozzie, Kenny hasn't called him into the office yet.

This TB series should be interesting though. If the bullpen blows a couple of more games down there....

Update: 27 April 09

Ozzie and the Boys are glad to get the heck out of the Trop. Ozzie got his wish, in that the Sox got out of there with a series split. Games 2 & 3 were brutal as the Sox faced Shields and Kazmir. Just when you think your offense is clicking, your run into a reality check with those two.

The Sox have slipped to 2nd place in the Division, a game behind Cleveland.

Bullpen continues to struggle, although Linebrink picked up his 2nd when in relief, and Jenks picked up saves 3 & 4.

Sox have the day off today, and they need it. The team is tired, and they everyday starters are showing signs of a fatigue. The road-trip will conclude after the 3-game series with Baltimore, starting tomorrow. The Orioles are 6-6, but are playing horrible at home, with just a 1-5 record. Hopefully that bodes well for the Good Guys. Quentin continues to swing a hot bat, and leads the AL in Average & HR's. Big Jim Thome is heating up as well.

As always, check my DM page for more in-depth coverage.
