Big Unit Stops Rays Streak, Prevents Sweep

After their victory in the first game of the series, Tampa Bay had won four straight. But Boston had won six.

Going for win number five - and hoping for a Boston collapse - Tampa Bay sent out Casey Fossum to face off against Yankee hurler Jaret Wright. Jeret was "wrong" on this day though, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings, and surrendering two homeruns. Not to be outdone, relief pitcher Rheal Cormier also allowed two homeruns, surrendering four runs in one inning pitched. Tampa Bay walked away with a 13-1 victory, with Fossum picking up win number eighteen.

Having found out that Boston also won yesterday, stretching their win streak to seven games, the Devil Rays looked to Ben Sheets to keep pace. Sheets had the task of facing one of the best pitchers of all time, Randy Johnson, 17-7 on the season. Sheets allowed three runs in 5.2 innings and was pulled in the sixth in favor of Cliff Politte. Politte got the final out in the sixth but imploded in the seventh, allowing three runs without getting an out. That would be more than enough for the Unit, who went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, to get win number eighteen.

Boston also won their eighth straight game today, pushing the Rays to a game and a half back in the wild card race.

Minor League Update:

None of my minor league teams made the postseason. Single A Visalia was a game up with five to go - but they lost their last five and finished a game behind...

Oh well, I didn't do much work on the minors in this dynasty anyway - it's all Tampa Bay, all the time.

When this dynasty is finished, I'll be doing my Giants one - and that one will be a multi-year deal, so the minors will be managed just like the parent club. :D

Sweep Hands Tampa Bay Wild Card Lead

Having moved within a half game of Boston after game one, the Devil Rays saw an opportunity - and with their series north of the border, they took it.

In game two, Tampa Bay sent out 22 year old Scott Kazmir to face off against Ted Lilly. Kazmir was strong, going 7.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. A three RBI game by Jorge Cantu, in which he went 3-5 with a homerun, was all the offense Tampa Bay would need in their 8-1 victory.

With a sweep, and a chance at moving into first in the wild card race on the line (pending on the performance of Boston), Tampa Bay's Casey Fossum took the mound, looking for win number nineteen. Toronto would send out Josh Towers to attempt to stop the surging Devil Ray offense - and he too would struggle. Giving up five runs in five innings, Towers was saddled with the loss, his seventh of the season. Fossum went 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits, good enough for win nineteen. Luis Vizcaino pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

Delmon Young Set To Return

The Devil Ray lineup will receive a boost as they head down the stretch in the American League Wild Card race, as young RF Delmon Young is expected to return for Tampa Bay's series against Baltimore today.

Young has missed about a month now with a separated shoulder but, earlier today in an interview with Mickey Brown, said that he was "100% and ready to help take Tampa to the postseason." Manager Joe Maddon couldn't be reach for comment but, if Young starts, we assume that the lineup will look like this tonight:

Baldelli CF

Crawford LF

Cantu 2B

Huff 3B

Thome DH

Feliz 1B

Young RF

Hall C

Upton SS

Sheets To Miss Next Start

The Devil Rays announced earlier today that Ben Sheets, who suffered a dislocated finger in the fifth inning of yesterday's win over Baltimore, will miss his next start, which is scheduled when the Yankees come to town for a four game set.

Manager Joe Maddon said in an interview that Matt Cain will make the spot start for Sheets:

"We have full confidence that Matt [Cain] will pitch effectively enough to give us a chance to win against the Yankees. It's a huge game this close too the end of the season, and with regards to where we stand in the division, and we need a big game from him - and we are sure he will deliver."

When asked about Sheets, Maddon said that the injury doesn't appear to be too serious but they want to make sure he's healthy before they send him out. According to the Rays, Sheets should be available for the following start; but only time will tell.

Tampa Takes Two Of Three - Within Striking Distance Of Yankees

Since the All-Star break, Boston and Tampa Bay have been in a race for the wild card. The Yankees lead the division by more than five games and were continuing to pound out victories, so any shot the Devil Rays had seemed to come from taking the wild card. However, getting hot in September, the Devil Rays have pulled within striking distance of the Bombers. If they could continue winning, a division title was within the realm of possiblities.

Going in to game two having received news that Ben Sheets would miss at least his next start, the Devil Rays needed some good news - and they looked to 21 game winner Noah Lowry for that salvation. Unfortunately, Lowry had a rare bad day, going 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on eleven hits. His offense put a good effort into making up the deficit, but fell a run short as the Orioles took the game 7-6. For Devil Ray fans, one good thing that came out of the game was seeing Delmon Young hit his first homerun since his return, getting three RBI on the blast.

The rubber match featured Scott Kazmir against Erik Bedard. Luckily for the Rays, both Boston and the Yankees had lost yesterday as well, allowing them to stay pat in the race. As for game three, Kazmir went 8.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits - and thanks to a six run fourth inning, Kazmir's performance would be enough to hand him his 17th win of the season, and give Tampa Bay another boost in the standings as New York and Boston both lost today.

The Yankees now come to town for a four game series that could determine who walks away with the division - and who is left to fight it out for the wild card.

OAK SS Bobby Crosby might miss the rest of the season with a strained left forearm but should be available for the start of the playoffs.

Yankees Win Final Series Against Tampa Bay

After yesterday's walkoff win, the Devil Rays had pulled within two games of the division lead. The Yankees, however, weren't about to hand the division over that easily.

In game two, Tampa Bay sent out struggling rookie Matt Cain against Shawn Chacon. Cain allowed four runs in five innings, good enough to give the Rays a chance to win. However, Chacon was strong, going 7.0 innings, allowing only one run on three hits, while striking out eight. The Yankees would add three more runs to take the game 7-1.

Game three saw Cy Young hopeful Noah Lowry go against Jaret Wright. Lowry and Wright battled to a draw, both giving up three runs. So, it was up to the bullpens - and the Yankees proved better, giving up no runs and no hits. Jose Mesa and Jeremy Accardo gave up a run a piece as the Yanks won game three of the series 5-3.

In the final game, Tampa Bay sent out Scott Kazmir to face off against veteran Randy Johnson. Kazmir gave up five runs in five innings, more than enough for the Yankees as the Big Unit went the distance, giving up two runs on six hits, to get his nineteenth win of the season.
