Devil Rays Maintain Wild Card Lead With Sweep Of White Sox

With a month left in the season, the Devil Rays are turning it on at the right time as they try to hold onto a slight lead in the wild card race.

In game two of their series with the White Sox, starter Casey Fossum was paired against Freddy Garcia. Fossum struggled a bit, allowing three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings, and left the game trailing. However, his bullpen picked him up, and allowed just one hit over the final 3.2 innings, giving the offense a shot. And the offense answered in the eighth, scoring two runs on a Jim Thome homerun off Jose Contreras, who was pitching in a relief role. Luis Vizcaino pitched a flawless ninth for the save.

Going for the sweep, Tampa Bay looked to their Cy Young hopeful Ben Sheets. And just like he has since he put the Devil Ray uniform on, he delivered. Sheets allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings, and struck out seven. Thome's 30th homerun of the season as well as two long balls from Ty Wigginton propelled the Rays to an 8-1 victory and the sweep.

How come you don't post the boxscore of the first game and just the final games of the series?

i don't know if i understand the question...

the boxscore for the first game is under the "players of the game". the final games of the series i sim so i don't have the scoring plays - i just write up a synopsis from the box score.

thanks - so do i. i have seven against the yanks this month, i think two against boston, and end the season with a four game at cleveland. could very well come down to that last series.

Beltre's Cycle Puts Devil Rays Half Game Behind Red Sox

After game one of the series, the Devil Rays sat a game and a half over the Red Sox in the race for the wild card. The Mariners, however, were in full spoiler mode as they entered Tampa Bay.

In game two, Scott Kazmir faced off against Jesse Foppert, who had pitched 2.1 innings the day before in relief of Felix Hernandez. Foppert showed up for his team, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and giving up two runs. Kazmir, who has struggled a bit in the last month, allowed five runs in five innings, including two homeruns. Leaving in the sixth, Kazmir and the rest of the Rays watched as Jeremy Accardo and Cliff Politte combined to give up six runs in two thirds of an inning as the Mariners walked away with this one, 12-4.

The rubber match featured Casey Fossum squaring off against veteran hurler Jamie Moyer. Fossum pitched well enough against eight Mariners - but the ninth one did all the damage Seattle would need. Adrian Beltre, who has struggled this year hitting under .270, went 4-4 as he hit for the cycle and drove in three runs. His homerun was number twenty on the year and the triple was his first. With the loss, Tampa Bay dropped to half a game back.

Obermueller Prevents Rays Sweep

After shelling the Twins in game one of the series with seven homeruns - three coming from deadline pickup Jim Thome - the Rays looked to add more to the win column in their chase for the wild card.

In game two the Rays sent out Noah Lowry who was searching for his 19th win of the season. The Twins countered with Brad Radke, 13-9 on the season. The Twins would lead 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Rays finally got to Radke to the tune of four runs. Luis Vizcaino would get the last out of the game for his 24th save.

Going for the sweep, the Rays sent out the struggling Scott Kazmir to face off against Wes Obermueller. Obermueller was brilliant, going eight while giving up one run on seven hits, while Kazmir continued to see the struggles continue lasting five, giving up four runs (two homeruns) on six hits. Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 32nd save.

Devil Rays Sweep A's - Still Half Game Back

With the first week of September gone, the Devil Rays - to the surprise of most - are still in the playoff hunt, half a game behind the Red Sox.

After winning game one in their series with Oakland - leaders in the West by double digits - the Rays looked to continue the trend in game two, sending out Ben Sheets against Barry Zito. Sheets would allow three runs in the second, only one of which was earned due to an error on first bagger Pedro Feliz. After that, Sheets settled down hoping his offense would respond with help against Zito. In the third, they did just that. Adding three in that frame, and four in the next, Tampa jumped out to a 6-3 lead. They would add five more in the next three innings, going on to take the game 11-5. Everyone got a hit for the Rays, and catcher Toby Hall was the only one that didn't cross the plate.

With a sweep on the line, the Devil Rays sent Noah Lowry out in search of his twentieth win. Lowry would face off against Rich Harden, who has been arguably the A's best pitcher this season. After three innings, the Rays held a 3-2 lead. It would stay that way until the seventh, when Tampa Bay scored two on a homerun by Carl Crawford. Lowry would start the ninth but Luis Vizcaino came in with the bases loaded and held the A's rally to a run short, preserving Lowry's 20th victory and notching his 25th save of the season.

Despite the sweep, Devil Ray fans were down due to a Boston sweep of their own, stretching their winning streak to five games. Tampa remains a half game back.
