Rays Continue Activity - Pickup Veteran Mesa

The Devil Rays, with the bullpen still struggling, continued to search for the missing piece as they traded newly acquired Kevin Mench to Colorado for veteran reliever Jose Mesa.

Minutes before the trade to Colorado, the catalyst behind the departure of Mench proved to be the acquistion of Wily Mo Pena. Pena comes from Boston who picked up reliever Dan Miceli and outfielder Damon Hollins.

Tampa GM sfgiantsflgators had this to say on Dan Patrick's radio show this morning:

"You know, we were going to look more towards our farm system in hopes to shore up the holes our bullpen has presented. But around lunch time yesterday, I got a call from Theo [Epstein] wondering about my interest in Pena. Over the course of the meal we had worked out a deal to send Dan and Damon to Boston for Wily. Wily has been a favorite of mine for awhile now - we think he is going to blossum into a great hitter.

But with him [Pena] now coming here, Kevin was dispensable - and Colorado was interested. We appreciate the professionalism that Kevin showed for the short time he was here and wish him the best - but I think the acquistion of Jose will really help our young relievers out, and hopefully win us some games."

Lineup is the same for righty or lefty. When playing a national league team, it's the same order - minus Pena.

My team is struggling this season as well with a 5-5 record and the bullpen has been pretty bad as well as the bottom of the rotation (although Chacin had a good game for me a couple games ago).

well your Jays are tearing up the East in my dyansty - half game up on the yanks, sox 2.5 back, me 4.5 back, and the orioles 10.5 back. and when i get around to posting the series i just had with them, they took the series...AGAIN (2 games to 3)!

Bullpen Falters In Rays Bid For Sweep

The Devil Rays were able to take game two but a sweep was not in the cards as the bullpen gives up six runs to hand game three to the Marlins.

Game two featured yet another good outing from Casey Fossum, who allowed eight hits and three earned over 7.2 innings, before Jeremy Accardo and Huston Street shut the door on the Marlins.

Game three remained within reach for the Rays, who trailed 2-1 after four. The score would remain that way until a Marlins run in the seventh made it 3-1. All hopes were dashed though in the eighth as the Marlins put up a five spot off relievers Chad Harville and Jason Childers, going on to win the game 8-1.

Chacin Ensures Jays Take Series But Kazmir Fights Off Sweep

The Blue Jays hot run continued against the Devil Rays as they won another series; but ace Scott Kazmir stepped up again to fight off the sweep.

Jays starter Gustavo Chacin picked up his fifth win of the year in game two, going the distance and giving up just three hits. The only run given up was on a homerun by Wily Mo Pena, his fourth of the season.

In game three, it was up to Kazmir to salvage a win - and it would have to come against one of the best pitchers in the league, Roy Halladay. Kazmir wasn't dominate but his offense gave him enough, scoring six times off Halladay, three of them earned. Kazmir would allow four runs over 7.1 innings, opening the way for Huston Street to nail down his third save of the season.

Boston, Tampa Split Four Game Offensive Showdown

In a series that feature a total of 57 runs scored between the two teams, pitching matchups became a second thought.

After outscoring the Red Sox 14-1 in game one, Tampa's offense returned for seconds in game two, winning 16-0. Boston was held to two hits in the game, both coming off Seth McClung, who went seven innings for the win. Travis Lee fell a double short of the cycle.

Despite jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning yesterday, Tampa couldn't hold back the Red Sox offense any longer as Boston scored eight in the game, taking game three 8-6. Boston had four homeruns in the game and Jason Veritek was a triple short of the cycle.

Boston's offense was back for more in game four, again scoring eight runs - five of which came in the second inning - on their way to a series split. Curt Schilling picked up his fifth win, going 6.2 innings and allowing four hits. Carl Crawford was a homerun short of the cycle.

Tampa Drops Series To Last Place Orioles

Entering the series with the Orioles 5.5 games back of the first place Yankees, Tampa Bay needed wins - but the Orioles relish the role of spoiler.

In game two, Rays starter Casey Fossum pitched a good game, allowing two runs on three hits in 8.1 innings. However, reliever Chad Harville allowed three hits and the winning run in the ninth - without getting an out.

Game three was within reach for the Rays as the game remained 3-2 until the eighth inning, when reliever Travis Harper allowed four runs on two hits, one a homerun to Miguel Tejada, to ensure an Orioles series victory.

Tampa manager Joe Maddon had this to say in an interview earlier today:

"I feel very good about our bullpen situation now. The additions of Cliff [Politte] and Danys [baez] will help tremendously. We now have four quality setup men - guys that could potentially close a game for most other teams. Huston [street] will continue to close games for us and Cliff, Danys, Jose [Mesa], and Jeremy [Accardo] will work the middle to late innings, if need be. We have work to do to catch the Yanks, but I feel much better about holding on to leads."

Bullpen The Story In Devil Ray Sweep of Jays

Throughout the season the Tampa bullpen has been criticized - well deserved criticism at that. But in a series that the Devil Rays needed to win if they were to establish themselves as A.L. East competitors, the newly revamped pen proved up to task.

This series featured three pitchers that were not with Tampa at the start of the season; however, if they continue to pitch like this, they will be a part of Tampa history for the rest of their careers.

It's still relatively early in the season, but Jose Mesa, Danys Baez, and Huston Street gave Tampa fans reason to hope. In game two, following a good outing by rookie Edwin Jackson, Jose Mesa pitched the last 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and no runs.

Game three saw Scott Kazmir struggle more than usual, giving up six runs over 7.2 innings. Fortunately, Tampa's offense was able to get seven runs off Toronto pitching, leaving it up to Danys Baez and Huston Street to finish the last 1.1 innings. Just two hits and three strikeouts later, Tampa held on to their one run lead, and enjoyed a three game sweep.
