Rays Take Series But Angels Fight Off Sweep

Entering the final two games of their series with the Angels, the Rays still saw themselves 4.5 games back of the first place Yankees. But still manager Joe Maddon preached "one game at a time."

So...the Rays started with game two of the series. After the start by Angels' hurler Kelvim Escobar - 7.2 innings, six hits, and one run allowed - it looked as though a series win might come down to the rubber match. However, in the ninth inning, facing Halo closer Francisco Rodriguez, the Devil Rays were able to score four runs and win the contest on a two run double by Carl Crawford.

Going for the sweep, the Rays sent young Matt Cain against another young prospect, Ervin Santana. Santana was hard to match today as he went 7.1 innings, allowing only two runs on eight hits. Cain pitched effectively, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings, but unlike the night before, the Rays couldn't dent the Angels' bullpen, dropping the last game of the set, 4-3.

Rays Notes:

Before the game today, Devil Ray manager Joe Maddon announced the move of Delmon Young to right field and Carl Crawford to left. He said in a pre-game interview that it was nothing against Crawford; the idea was that Young has the better arm, and now having some game experience under his belt, is ready to take on the full time role of right fielder for the team. Crawford was approached before the game and supported Maddon's decision.

League Injuries:

MIN P Carlos Silva was put on the 60 day DL with a fractured ankle. He is expected out until at least mid-September.

Tampa Pours On The Offense In Royal Sweep

After game one's 2-1 battle, the Devil Rays offense exploded for 19 runs in the last two games of the series. In both games, the Rays depended on multi-run late innings to seal the victories.

In game two, the Rays jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after the second inning. The Royals answered with four in the third and two in the sixth to tie the game. A one-run eighth and two-run ninth would give the Rays bullpen all the support they would need though as Huston Street picked up his second straight save.

Game three appeared to be heading the way of the first game, with the teams tied 1-1 after five. After taking the lead in the sixth with a solo shot from Travis Lee, the Rays opened up for two in the seventh, four in the eigth, and two more in the ninth. The Royals added two each in the eighth and ninth, but fell short 10-5, as Tampa picked up the sweep.

Tampa Settles For Split Against Motown Cats

Missing winning the series by one run, the Rays settled for the split in their trip to Detroit.

In game two, Tampa pitcher Matt Cain's tough luck continued. Cain allowed only one run on five hits in his game two outing, but Detroit pitcher Kenny Rogers threw a four hit shutout, picking up the win. Cain fell to 2-5 on the season.

In game three, Tampa's offense returned to the tune of 12 runs, five in the ninth, to take game three 12-5. Aubrey Huff connected for his 21st homerun in the contest.

Going for the series win, Tampa Bay's ace Scott Kazmir faced off against Nate Robertson. Kazmir, who has struggled his last two outings, continued that trend, giving up five runs in five innings. Detroit would add four more to take the game 9-2, forcing Tampa to go home with a split.

Offenses Come Alive - Rays Take Series

After a pitcher's duel to start off the series, offense was the story in games two and three, with the Devil Rays winning game three to take the series.

In game two, the Phillies answered the game one shutout by taking a 7-1 lead in the third inning. They added four more runs in the fifth inning and went on to win 12-5. Mike Lieberthal, Chase Utley, and Bobby Abreu homered for Philadelphia.

In game three, it was the Rays turn to beef up the stats as they scored nine in the first four innings, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Adding five more in the next two innings, Tampa Bay ran away with game three, 14-5. Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Aubrey Huff, and B.J. Upton homered for Tampa Bay. Mike Lieberthal also added a homerun, continuing to drive the Rays' crazy. Lieberthal was responsible for ending Casey Fossum's perfect game with a walk in the fifth inning in the first game of the series. He also ended the no-hitter in the eighth with a one out single.

Can you post the standings (just the AL East)? I wanna see how you compare to the other teams in the division.

yeah, the end of the month is coming up pretty soon so i'll have my July 1st league leaders, standings, etc. post coming up then. on page 6, about halfway down, are the standings for June 1st.

currently, i think i'm 5 or 6 games back, with the yankees in first, then red sox, then the jays and i are either tied, or i'm a half game ahead. orioles are last, about four games behind myself and the jays.

Blockbuster Trade Sends Thome To Arizona

Mickey Brown

In a blockbuster trade earlier today, the Chicago White Sox sent 1B Jim Thome to Arizona for SP Brandon Webb. This filled the need for the power bat that Arizona had been searching for and added to an already powerful White Sox pitching staff. But was Webb too much? With Arizona's shaky staff, it definitly begs the question as to why. Pitching wins championships - and Arizona might have given away their best chance.

Lowry, McClung Switch Coasts - Rays Get Another Giant Pitcher

Mickey Brown

Hours after the DBacks and White Sox announced their blockbuster agreement, the Devil Rays and Giants added news of their own as they cooberated on another deal, sending SP Noah Lowry and utility man Pedro Feliz to the Devil Rays in exchange for SP Seth McClung, RP Travis Harper, and utility man Russell Branyan.

TB

Noah Lowry

Pedro Feliz

SF

Russell Branyon

Seth McClung

Travis Harper

Lowry, the day after winning his major-league leading tenth game of the season, was unavailable for comment. Devil Rays' GM sfgiantsflgators was in house though and had this to say when asked about the move:

"[Noah] Lowry is a hell of a pitcher, and he's proven that so far this year. We felt that we were one starter away from contending in this division and he was the number one target on our board.

Seth [McClung] and Travis [Harper] have been off and on all season, and a change of scenery might be what they need to put it all together. [Pedro] Feliz was an added bonus for us though as now we have a guy that can fill in pretty much anywhere to give some guys the day off down the stretch. He will also be DHing against right handers, and Wily [Mo Pena] will continue to DH against lefties. Pedro has a bit more power against righties and will shake up the offense and hopefully give our pitcher's a run or two more of support."

When asked if the trading was done, sfgiantsflgators said that "it's never done, but we feel very confident about our current situation and aren't actively searching for any more parts."

For us Rays fans, this was a great day. It was nice to see Harper finally get dealt and the acquistion of Lowry gives the rotation a heck of a boost. Barring a meltdown, the Rays could take a plus .500 record into the all-star break - and hopefully give the powerhouses of the East a run for their uber-money.

Rays Take Two Of Three From Arizona

Continuing to fight their way up the American League East ladder, the Devil Rays looked to sweep the DBacks this week. A game two win put them in position to do just that, but Arizona fought off the feat with a 7-4 win today.

In game two, the Devil Rays got six strong innings from Scott Kazmir - but Kazmir was matched by Arizona starter Miguel Batista. In the seventh, Kazmir gave up his only run of the game and was pulled for reliever Dan Smith. Smith ended the threat keeping the score 1-0. The Devil Rays got to Batista as well in the seventh, getting two off of him, pushing the score to 2-1. That would be how the game ended with Huston Street getting his eighth save of the season.

Tampa had arguably their best pitcher this season, Casey Fossum, going in game three against Russ Ortiz. Fossum had an uncharacterically off day though, giving up five runs in 1.2 innings. Tampa would only be able to answer with four runs in the game, allowing Arizona to take the victory 7-4.

Tampa Wins Last Two To Take Series From Atlanta

For Tampa Bay to win the series against Atlanta, they would have to depend on the arms of two rookies.

In game two, Matt Cain went for the Rays against Brave veteran John Smoltz. While Smoltz was his usual self, allowing three runs over six plus innings, Matt Cain did him one better, giving up just two over 5.2 innings. The Rays bullpen shutdown Atlanta allowing only one hit, with Huston Street collecting his ninth save.

In the rubber match, it was Tampa's Edwin Jackson against another Atlanta veteran, Tim Hudson. Jackson was pulled after three innings with an apparent leg injury, up 2-1. Long reliever Scott Dunn came in and went four innings giving up only two hits and no runs. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his tenth save of the year.

Jackson Injury Not Serious - Should Only Miss One Start

Edwin Jackson, who left yesterday's game against the Braves with a leg injury, was relieved today when MRI's revealed nothing serious. Jackson had this to say before today's game against the in-state rival Marlins:

"It's just a knee sprain - nothing too serious. Coach [Joe Maddon] is going to hold me out from my next start but I should be ready to go for the one after that. I'm pretty disappointed but I realize that it's early in my career and they don't want me to get seriously hurt. And I understand that they want me at 100% so we can chase down the Yanks."
